In today’s gig economy, side hustles, freelance work, and gig work are all experiencing a major boom. But until now, little has really been known about gig workers. What are their working habits and personal characteristics? And how is side hustle culture impacting the job market as a whole?
To get these answers, we conducted a Q4 2023 survey of 320 Americans who rely on some form of independent work, either as a side hustle or their primary income source. Here’s what we discovered.
Key findings:
- Caregiving roles like babysitting and pet sitting are the most popular side hustles, whereas writing/editing/blogging and IT services are the most common freelance jobs.
- Side hustlers have higher average earnings than freelancers, even though they tend to work fewer hours.
- The coaching, consultancy, and personal training industries are associated with the highest overall earnings, whereas house cleaning and product testing are associated with the lowest.
- COVID-19 led to a major boom in side hustles, with nearly one in five independent workers saying they turned to self-employment to cope with financial or career difficulties brought on by the pandemic.
- An astonishing 85% of side hustlers who work from home “daylight,” or do side hustle work while on the clock for their primary job.
