The Job:
Stanley Black & Decker, a world leader in the development and commercialization of power tools, hand tools, outdoor equipment and industrial fasteners is seeking to hire a Senior Patent Agent to help protect intellectual property. The candidate will be responsible for analyzing inventions, conducting prior art searches, assisting with the drafting of patent applications, and collaborating with patent attorneys to successfully facilitate the filing and prosecution of patents, essentially ensuring the legal protection of new technologies by understanding both technical details and patent law intricacies. The candidate will also facilitate the IP clearance for new product and technology development. The candidate will also enable third party collaboration and partnerships by ensuring the appropriate confidentiality ownership and/or licensing arrangements are established. A background in engineering (preferably mechanical engineering or electrical engineering) and a passion to work closely with inventors and members of project teams are required.
As a Senior Patent Agent, you’ll be part of our Intellectual Property team working as a remote employee. You’ll get to:
- Project Alignment: Engage with project and research teams to assist in recognizing patentable inventions and advise on conducting patent clearances.
- Invention evaluation: Assessing the commercial viability and patentability of new inventions by analyzing their technical aspects, market potential, and novelty.
- Prior art searches: Conducting thorough searches through patent databases and public literature to identify existing technologies that may impact the novelty assessment of a new invention.
- Patent application review: Assist with preparation of patent applications, by reviewing technical descriptions, claims, and drawings, to ensure strong protection of developed innovations and its unique features.
- IP Clearance: Working under the supervision of IP counsel, clear the features, configuration and operation of new technology and product development.
- IP Partnership: Preparing the necessary requisites (confidentiality terms; IP ownership and access) to facilitate third party collaboration, including formal partnerships.
- Technical expertise, support and training: Providing technical guidance to patent attorneys on complex technical concepts related to the invention.
- Competitive analysis: Monitoring competitor patents and identifying potential infringement risks.
- Patent portfolio management: Maintaining and strategizing the management of a company's patent portfolio.
- IP Project Support: Provide support to IP attorneys relating to collaborations with third parties as well as adversarial matters.

- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Technical writing abilities to clearly and concisely explain complex technical concepts
- Proficiency in patent databases and search tools
- Advanced knowledge of IP management and docketing systems is highly valued
