Job Description:
An Independent Contractor Interpreter is responsible for facilitating interpretation sessions for CyraCom clients in a professional, focused manner and utilizing the necessary equipment to provide accurate and complete interpretation.
Interpreters must possess and maintain a high level of skill, proficiency, and professionalism in interpreting. Due to the sensitive nature of much of the information processed during an interpretation session, a high degree of integrity and confidentiality must be maintained at all times.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES):
- Provides meaning-for-meaning interpreting.
- Follows interpreter protocols and procedures as required by CyraCom clients.
- Follows all CyraCom policies and procedures related to information confidentiality and interpreter ethics.
- Continuously improves vocabulary and specialized subject matter knowledge, as required for various clients, such as medical, legal, social services, etc.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Fluency in English and the target language.
- Skilled at communicating, both orally and in writing in English and target language.
- Basic understanding of linguistics and different cultures.
- Skilled in adjusting to rapidly changing circumstances.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and skilled at exercising initiative within the parameter of policies and procedures as required by CyraCom’s client standards.
- Ability to use standard office equipment such as telephones, computers, copiers and fax machines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
We are looking for experienced candidates that have a mixture of required and preferred qualifications.
Required:
- Interpretation experience (Examples of interpretation experience: medical, court, or government interpretation. For languages of lesser diffusion, interpreting within their communities, family, congregation, or during missionary work.)
OR
- Professional interpreter certification or training.
Preferred:
- A two- to four-year degree in interpretation.
- Higher education taught in English or other working language.
- Experience in relevant areas other than interpretation (e.g. healthcare).
