The Department of Environmental Quality is looking to fill an Environmental Scientist position in the Division of Water Quality. This position may be filled at any of the advertised levels listed below. Salary depends on experience and the job level offered within the series.
Job Description
The Southeast Utah Watershed Coordinator facilitates locally-led watershed planning efforts and serves as a key liaison between local watershed groups, landowners, partner agencies, NGOs, and local officials to develop and implement projects that address non-point source water pollution. Working collaboratively with stakeholders, the Watershed Coordinator leads water quality data collection, identifies funding opportunities, develops grant proposals, and provides technical assistance for watershed improvement projects. Core responsibilities include implementing Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) and watershed protection priorities, developing multi-stakeholder watershed plans, and conducting monitoring for assessment. This position is funded by a State Nonpoint Source Grant operating under the direction of the Utah Division of Water Quality. The office location of this position is a home office located in Grand or San Juan County, Utah.
Best Qualified Candidate
The best qualified candidate will have the following:
- At least 1 year of experience with project and/or program management preferably focused on water quality issues and/or watershed planning
- Ability to coordinate, communicate, and maintain highly effective professional relationships with local, state and federal agencies and stakeholders.
- Practices effective facilitation and project management.
- Knowledge of Clean Water Act, Utah Water Quality Act, Utah’s Administrative Rules, and associated guidance that govern water quality programs in Utah.
Preferences
- A Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited institution in biology, hydrology, aquatic ecology, environmental science, watershed science, natural resources, limnology, civil or environmental engineering, communication or closely related discipline.
- OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and paid professional employment directly related to the above tasks.
Job Series
The selected candidate for this position may be brought in as an Environmental Scientist I with a salary range of $24.65 - $37.02, an Environmental Scientist II with a salary range of $29.00 - $43.57 per hour, or an Environmental Scientist III with a salary range of $34.13 - $51.28 per hour. It is anticipated that this position will start as an Environmental Scientist I with a starting hourly wage of $25.00.
Work Location
This is a remote position based out of Grand and San Juan Counties, and work must be performed in Utah. This position requires the employee to provide internet service that is of sufficient speed to support all work-related applications, systems, and devices.
