GENERAL SUMMARY:
The goal of the RYSE MED program is to give high school, undergraduate and medical students an opportunity to explore talents and gain experience that will bolster their successful path to healthcare careers. Under the supervision of the Henry Ford Medical Group’s Manager for Diversity and Inclusion, the RYSE MED Student Mentor will support high school students’ engagement in academic work related to healthcare clinical and research knowledge and skills. Activities that the Student Mentor may support include health equity project work, interactive didactics, shadowing, CPR training, simulations, virtual reality, professional development, and more.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is structured to support high school students’ experiences in the RYSE MED program. Student Mentors will help faculty and staff facilitate hands-on learning in healthcare clinical and research settings, working both in-person and virtually, independently and in groups, to complete program activities. Duties include coordinating and participating in:
- Shadowing physicians and other healthcare clinicians like nurses, Physician’s Assistants, pharmacists, etc. in different medical specialties,
- Supervising and participating in medical and surgical skills simulations,
- Completing and supporting certifications like CPR and mental health first aid,
- Providing academic and professional skills development mentorship, coaching, and advice to high school student scholars,
- Receiving mentorship from health professions students and faculty,
- Engaging in and leading interactive workshops and didactic learning sessions,
- Supporting the high school students’ efforts to design, conduct, and present health equity research projects in groups, and
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Great time management, communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
- Ability to effectively work on projects assigned.
- The ability to work in-person, remotely, independently, and in collaborative teams is required.
- Basic computer skills, i.e., Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills are preferred.
- Self-motivated and committed learners.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Generally good. Works in a normal office environment, research lab, and clinical setting where there is no excessive physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, and the like. While in the clinical setting, may be subject to increased exposure to communicable diseases, which is mitigated by providing full access to personal protective equipment. May have interactions with reactive and/or potentially violent individuals, which will be minimized wherever possible.
