Job Description:
Rope Course- Instructor and Lead Instructor
The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for a Rope Course Lead Instructor and Instructors for our Parks and Recreation Department. The Lead Instructor and Instructors assists in the implementation of a safe and effective usage of rope course elements and equipment.
Examples of Duties
Instructors:
Instruct, lead and supervise participants safely through the ropes course.
Follow standard operating procedures and demonstrate techniques and safety guidelines to all participants.
Conduct rope course training and ensure all participants are adequately instructed in order to ensure a safe, successful and enjoyable experience.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of operational risk management.
Assist with equipment inventory and report equipment damage, malfunction and repair requirement of the rope course itself and all associated equipment to management.
Fit harnesses and helmets correctly and supervise the use of all personal safety equipment. Secure the ropes course when not in use.
Accompany participants at all times while on the course site, maintain orderly behavior and safe and fun learning environment.
Perform daily inspections and take inventory of course and equipment.
Lead Instructor:
In addition to the Instructor duties, this position assists in the development and delivery of ropes course programs ensuring they are appropriate for the age and ability of the participants.
Ensure Rope Course Instructors and participants know and adhere to safety guidelines and educational procedures of the ropes course.
Assist in the risk management and inspection of all ropes courses and equipment.
Work with park management to identify and prioritize projects.
Typical Qualifications
Physical: Must be in good physical condition with the ability to lift 30 pounds and walk at least one mile over rough terrain. Must be confident at heights. Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
Mental: Ability to clearly and effectively communicate. Ability to follow directions in both verbal and written form.
Required to attend mandatory ropes course training and staff meetings.
Provide excellent customer service and communication skills to other staff members and participants.
Instructors:
Requires High school diploma or equivalent; must be at least 18 years of age; at least 3 months of experience or extensive knowledge of outdoor recreation skills in at least one of the work areas as evidence by having completed college coursework or ropes course certification approved by our Parks Department. Must be able to obtain certification as a level I instructor for the ropes course (paid for by the Parks Department).
Lead Instructor:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; must be at least 21 years of age; at least one year of experience or extensive knowledge of outdoor recreation skills in at least one of the work areas as evidence by having completed college coursework or ropes course certification approved by our Parks Department. Must be able to obtain certification as a level II instructor for the ropes course (paid for by the Parks Department).
Instructors:
Attend all required ropes course training.
Must be able to work with all ages and all levels of ability.
Must be able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification.
Lead Instructor:
Must have training and experience in teaching ropes course.
Experience in setting up, inspecting and maintaining ropes course equipment and elements.
Knowledge of risk assessment.
Must be First Aid/CPR Certified.
Supplemental Information
Applicants with experience in nature or environmental education preferred.
This position will generally work the months of April through November, depending upon weather.
This position is anticipated to work 6-20 hours per week depending on the needs of the department and community. The ideal candidate must be available to work weekdays and weekends.
The salary range for Instructors are $16.35-$23.35 an hour and the Lead Instructor salary range is $18.35-$25.35 an hour.
