Job Description:
Mountain View Hospital is looking for a Patient Financial Counselor to join our team!
JOB SUMMARY:
Create and work medical accounts to prepare for surgery, emergency visits, pain management or in-patient admission. Work with doctor offices to obtain any patient information for the surgery/services. Contact insurance via phone and/or web to review patient benefits and calculate patient estimate portion based on benefits. Contact insurance to notify of in-patient notification. Working with several different departments directly to make sure the patient’s care is the priority.

Please note benefits are based on eligibility according to full-time, part-time or PRN status classification.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Establishes rapport with physicians’ offices to facilitate financial status prior to services.
- Meets with patients before admission.
- Meet with patients to discuss all aspects of their upcoming bill/benefits.
- Contacts private pay patients scheduled for surgery prior to admission, as instructed by PFC, to find out payer source, cancels admissions if patient has no ability to pay or post-pones surgery until resources can be found.
- Verifies demographic information and payment source upon pre-admission.
- Secures payment with patient and insurance by pre-certifying services with insurance companies or obtains a commitment as to a schedule of payment.
- Follows through with assistance until the applications are approved or denied.
- Handles referrals from Admissions if there is a problem with insurance.
- Works directly with Billing Office in collections.
- Contacts insured patient to review benefits and payment options.

Qualifications
Education/Certification: AA or equivalent from two year college or technical school would be helpful.
Experience: Two years of medical staff office work can be substituted for education requirement.
Equipment/Technology: Strong computer skills a must.
Language/Communication: Strong communication skills needed.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concept: of basic algebra and geometry.
Mental Capabilities: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Interpersonal: Ability to work well with others.
