The Circulation Clerk provides outstanding customer service and assists patrons with library card registrations, material processing, and transactions. Candidates must have a high school diploma and customer service experience.

Job Description:

The McHenry Public Library District is seeking an onsite Circulation Clerk. This individual is responsible for providing excellent customer service to library patrons through registration and renewal of library cards, processing library materials for check-in and check-out, sorting and shelving library materials, and processing money transactions. The salary for this position ranges between $15.00 and $15.77 per hour, depending on qualifications.

The ideal candidate for this position should possess a "director of first impressions" mindset, exhibit exceptional organizational and problem-solving abilities, demonstrate a keen attention to detail, and be capable of delivering outstanding customer service to our patrons.

The schedule for this position is listed below and may change. Flexibility in scheduling is needed to assist with coverage during staff vacations, absences, Library In-Service days, and department meetings.

Schedule A:  Monday 12:45-9:15, Thursday 8:45-12:45, Friday 8:45-5:15 & one weekend/month

Schedule B:  Monday 8:45-5:15, Wednesday 12:45-9:15, Thursday 8:45-12:45 & one weekend/month

Schedule C: Tuesday 8:45-5:15, Wednesday 12:45-9:15, Friday 8:45-12:45 & one weekend/month

Summary:

This position is responsible for registering and renewing library cards, processing library materials for check-in and check-out, sorting and shelving library materials, processing money transactions, and providing excellent customer service to library patrons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Greets patrons entering and exiting the library and provides directional information as needed.
  • Provides customer service in a friendly, positive, and cooperative manner.
  • Assists patrons and staff in the materials check-out process, including retrieving account information, conducting money transactions, and handling other concerns.
  • Registers new library patrons, maintains accurate records in the library database, and maintains library users' confidentiality.
  • Provides patron assistance on the telephone and via email.
  • Handles cash and check transactions and assists with operating the cash register.
  • Organizes library materials according to established procedures.
  • Assists ILL Associate with processing and receiving the interlibrary loan requests and may pull and send out pick list items.
  • Assists patrons with meeting room reservations.
  • Performs departmental Opening and Closing procedures.
  • Processes in-transit materials from the inter-library system delivery.
  • Prepares and shelves patron-requested library items.
  • Prepares library materials for routing to other libraries.
  • Answers incoming calls, handles patron requests or problems and/or directs calls to proper extensions.
  • Performs basic level troubleshooting and support of the AMH system.
  • Verifies and processes overdue notices.
  • Sorts, shelves, shifts, shelf reads and edges the library materials while inspecting the collection to maintain a neat and orderly appearance.
  • Ensures all policies and procedures of the McHenry Public Library are followed.
  • Serves on library committees.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities.
  • Attends networking meetings and outreach events.
  • Those in the position of a Bilingual Circulation Clerk must also be able to perform all Spanish duties. In addition, the candidate must have the ability to read, write, and speak/converse in Spanish fluently.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent work experience)
  • One or more years of customer service experience, library experience desirable
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Familiarity with office (or library) technology
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficient technology skills, including Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Google Suite applications, Internet, and the ability to adapt to changing technology
  • Depending on the position, fluent written, verbal, and listening communication skills in Spanish may be required.

Working Conditions

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see.
  • The employee is frequently required to bend, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Noise level is generally similar to an office environment but may be loud at times.
  • Repeated movements with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers while using a keyboard.
  • Clarity of vision at approximately 20 inches or less (i.e., working with small objects or reading small print), including the use of computers.
  • The employee will occasionally lift, push, or move (library material and/or equipment) up to 35 pounds and push book trucks (carts) loaded with material weighing up to 150 pounds.
  • Due to safety precautions, the employee will be required to wear close-toed shoes.
