Description
Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.
The ideal candidate will work closely with the Cinema Management Team, Projectionists, and Programmers to operate a busy and dynamic four-screen cinema in downtown Brooklyn. The PT Assistant Cinema Manager oversees the Floor Staff and handles all operations within the cinema, from box office and concession sales to customer service.
In addition, maintain an innovative and quality operation of BAM’s Cinemas 365 days a year. Protect BAM’s brand by promoting BAM’s award-winning cinema programming, with a primary focus on BAM Film (the year-round repertory program), BAMcinemaFest (annual festival of American independent film), and ‘first run films’ (new release films) while meeting revenue and strategic goals. The PT Assistant Cinema Manager will also expand awareness of cinema at BAM and cultivate film audiences by communicating the diversity of the services that BAM provides.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assistant Managers are expected to learn all facets of the position including concession and box office operations, supervising/ training the Floor Staff, managing cash and credit card sales with assistance from the Cinema Management Team.
The Assistant Manager will be responsible for learning and administering the following duties:
- Customer Service Troubleshooting: Comps, returns, incidents, general questions, ADA needs
- Prepare cinema space before opening close cinema doors, prep concessions, call for cleaning if needed, Mylar updates, Fireguard and Safety Walk through; Flag any safety, maintenance issues
- Manage Day-to-Day Cinema Safety Operations: Food & Safety, Fire Guard
- Issue sales reports to Film distributors
- Oversee and assist Q+As, Special Events; submit event report
- Floor Staff training and ongoing feedback to improve customer service and quality of work
- Floor Staff Task Delegation: Ensuring tasks are completed and done to quality standards
- Assistant Manager mentoring new hires via shift shadowing
- Picking up and securing deliveries from stage and ADA door which includes concessions, inventory, print traffic.
- Assists with concession operations: Ensuring stock room is clean and organized, quality control concession records to report current stock and flag concerning items to senior cinema manager, quality control of FOH concessions ensuring items are stocked and items logged in toast, executing concession purchasing , concession display , receiving orders and submitting invoices in Multiview, report any concerning concession status to senior cinema manager, manage toast POS system.
- Tessitura Programing: Ad hoc and time sensitive updates to film schedules, promos and special codes
- Cash Maintenance: Credit card sales, troubleshooting credit card errors, end of night counting and logging sales, counting safe drawer to ensure accurate amount, submitting bank report, reporting to finance if cash deposit is short or over, elevating to Senior Cinema Manager if change is needed
- Elevate floor staff needs
- When the cinema closes, stay until the last customer leaves
- For equipment Maintenance management, when Senior Cinema Manager is unavailable and/or off duty; follow up, oversee and report on the work done.
- Take Direction from Senior Cinema Manager, Associate Director of FOH Operations, Director of Cinema Operations, VP of Operations
- Assumes additional responsibilities when Senior Cinema Manager is absent
Qualifications
- Ability to provide friendly and polite customer service
- MUST be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Requires ability to climb stairs and stand throughout performances
- Requires ability to lift boxes
- Works well with others and is a team player
- Must be 18 years or older due to our sales of beer & wine
- Previous customer service experience
- Interest in the nonprofit arts community and BAM
- Strong oral and written communications skills
- Excellent multitasking skills
- Extremely organized, enjoys working systematically
Compensation: The pay rate for this position is $25.96 per hour. The role is represented by Local 2110 and will be paid in accordance with the BAM/UAW Local 2110 Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position is part-time, non-exempt, and eligible for Sick and Safe Time and Paid Hours off.

- This role is on-site and cannot be conducted remotely.
- Requires the ability to climb stairs, stand for long periods of time, and lift/carry objects of 10-15 lbs.
- Schedule: Sat: 2p – Close, Sun: 12p-10p with potential for pick up shifts.
