In the past, people structured their lives around rigid work schedules. Personal tasks had to be done outside the 9-to-5 block; if an employee needed to run an errand during the day, they usually had to request time off.
These days, that norm is shifting. Rather than grinding through 8-hour stretches, some are working in short blocks of a few hours throughout the day, from early in the morning to late at night.
According to the 2025 State of Hybrid Work Report from Owl Labs, a video conferencing platform, up to 65% of workers are interested in this version of hybrid working, which is known as microshifting.
What exactly is microshifting, and why do so many workers prefer it? Is it really better than the traditional 9-to-5 model?
