February 2, 2026 – Today, SideHustles.com released the results of its poll (taken through January 2026) on how independent workers view and use AI. The study polled 600 freelancers and gig workers about how they’ve incorporated AI into their workflows, whether they’ve lost clients to it, and how they think gig apps and the government should respond to AI.
Key takeaways
- One-third of respondents (35%) have lost work to clients who now use AI to complete it.
- A large majority (79%) have concerns about heavily using AI to do their independent work.
- More than half (55%) believe that people should be legally required to disclose it when they use AI to provide a service.
- Nearly 7 in 10 (69%) want gig platforms to implement skills tests to prove workers aren’t faking their expertise with AI.
- Almost half (46%) believe that learning to use AI is a requirement for anyone starting a business or side hustle in 2026.
- 74% of those under 30 believe the government should provide a basic living allowance if AI eliminates enough jobs.
- Men are more interested in AI than women and are nearly twice as willing (30% vs. 17%) to use it to lower their rates and undercut competitors.
“People aren’t sure how much they, personally, like using AI yet, but most recognize that it’s a useful tool,” said Mark Slack, career expert at SideHustles.com. “Our results show that workers support measures to slow down the AI arms race in the gig economy, but as long as it’s underway, they’re determined not to get left behind.”
