Customer service is exactly what it sounds like: it consists of interacting with a company's customers to help them resolve issues and field their complaints. Depending on the role, customer service may be conducted over the phone, via email or a chat program, or in person.
When most people think of customer service, they think of the software industry, and many jobs in this field do involve helping people troubleshoot technical issues. However, companies in virtually every industry hire customer service reps.
Most customer service positions only require a high school diploma or equivalent, and you'll usually receive on-the-job training to help you understand the products or services you'll be helping people with. You do need an array of soft skills to land a customer service role. Most involve remaining calm and upbeat while dealing with potentially frustrated customers, so you'll need to be empathetic and patient and have excellent communication skills.
