Imagine not being able to get a job … because you don’t have a job.
That’s the reality of some job seekers out there in 2026. It’s not a new problem, either.
“I’ll do anything—but somebody has to be willing to hire me,” Albert Mango told The New York Times back in 2013.
Mango was caught in a vicious cycle of unemployment where companies refused to hire him because he was unemployed. He had been out of work for 9 months at the time and said he lost his home after lapsing on rent payments.
“If you’re not working, that’s already Strike 1 against you.”
Some job seekers now see postings explicitly marked with disclaimers like must be currently employed or unemployed candidates will not be considered. As ABC News recently reported, some postings also include new exemptions like “no layoff candidates.” This seems to imply that if you’ve been laid off, you’re “damaged goods.”

There’s no harm in applying.
