How Viable Is Freelance Voice Acting on Upwork in the Age of AI?

For years, many people in the voicework community have been sounding the alarm about the rise of sophisticated AI text-to-speech tools and their effect on the industry.

In 2024, for example, the Australian Association of Voice Actors (AAVA) reported that the adoption of generative AI voice cloning threatened thousands of local voice artists, with some members facing up to a 30% reduction in income as corporate entities and broadcast networks replaced human talent with synthetic alternatives.12

Today, the threat of AI has become even more pronounced. However, it isn’t evenly distributed.

“The big projects seem to be fairly safe,” Reid said. He pointed out that national commercials and high-production animations still seek out humans. “It’s the smaller projects, the ones that truly sustain a voiceover artist, that are drying up.”

Those smaller projects include:

• Radio and podcast advertisements
• E-learning courses
• Corporate training modules
• YouTube narration
• Explainer videos

With this work disappearing, Reid says that some voice actors are becoming more dependent on repeat clients and bigger roles that come around much less frequently.

That creates an especially difficult situation for newcomers.

Traditionally, novice voice actors needed to complete many smaller jobs to build a portfolio, collect reviews, and develop client relationships before eventually qualifying for more lucrative work. If those entry-level opportunities are being absorbed by AI, getting established becomes much harder.

Is AI even good at voice acting?

While some argue that AI has passed the indistinguishable threshold, many professional voice actors disagree.

Voice actors like Meghan Cofer, for instance, argue that AI cannot replicate the subtle nuances of human speech.

A cloned voice might be convincing enough to catch an unsuspecting victim off guard during a brief, low-fidelity phone scam, but that’s different from holding an audience’s attention through a sustained, emotionally resonant performance.

“I truly think that AI voices will not be able to take the place of real human voices,” Cofer told us. “Deep down, I think human ears recognize and understand real human voices on a different level than AI voices, no matter how incredibly close they get.”

Dan Lenard, president of the World-Voices Organization, told Wired that AI voices often default to being “as boring as possible.” Lenard believes that AI isn’t capable of replicating the accents and artistry of human speech.3

If this is true, it suggests that to survive, voiceover artists may need to lean into emotional, character-driven work that machines can’t replicate, rather than basic narration.

However, to break into this tier of work, which historically hasn’t been considered entry-level, you need to first build a professional foundation.

You don’t need a formal background in drama or theater to start working in voiceover. Both Cofer and Reid transitioned into it from entirely different fields, and they brought transferable skills that helped them succeed.

Cofer, for example, spent the last 15 years as a veterinary technician team supervisor. She took up voice acting on a part-time basis in 2022 and now operates her platform at Meg Cofer Voiceover.

“Veterinary medicine has a huge focus on client communication and service,” she told us. “Discussing projects with current clients, building relationships—having these skills has really helped my voiceover business thrive.”

Reid, meanwhile, spent a brief period working in television and entertainment in Georgia before transitioning to a full-time remote voiceover career in 2016 and founding Mike Reid Voiceover.

“I learned that I thoroughly enjoy the process of bringing stories to life,” Reid said, adding that it was a massive boost to his confidence. “I was able to become comfortable in front of the camera, which translated easily to being in front of my microphone.”

Although Cofer and Reid’s prior backgrounds weren’t directly related to voice work, they gave both of them strengths to draw on as they developed their careers.

Reid’s entertainment background, for example, helped him build a career that includes work for clients such as the US Air Force and FEMA, as well as projects for video game developers. His experience performing lends itself to work that requires more than simply reading from a script.

Choosing your niches

As Reid’s experience demonstrates, your previous career can be a useful starting point when deciding what kind of voiceover work to pursue.

Someone with experience in healthcare, education, sales, or corporate communications may already understand the terminology and tone required for certain types of professional voiceovers. On the other hand, someone with acting experience may be better positioned to pursue character-driven work, and so on.

This doesn’t mean you need to choose a specialty before accepting your first job. In fact, Cofer took a deliberately broad approach when she was starting out.

“I was not very selective with the projects I initially took on, so that I could get a few completed on my profile to help me grow as fast as possible,” she said.

Once you have some experience, you can pay attention to which types of projects suit your voice, interests, and existing expertise, then use those strengths to position yourself strategically against AI-generated narration.

Which voiceover niches are resilient to AI?

To stay competitive, Reid suggested targeting niches that require a wider emotional range and complex acting.

“I think the ‘safest’ space will be with character voices,” Reid said. “Video game characters, animations and cartoons, animated movies, dubbing, and other projects that require actual acting will also require actual humans to do it.”

Your ideal niche may also depend on your voice itself, although you can train it for different styles. Animation and video games, for example, often require big and bold performances, while corporate narration requires warmth and clarity but less emotional intensity.

Investing in professional training

If you’re a newcomer, Cofer’s biggest piece of advice is to get professional help setting up your equipment and to work with an experienced voiceover coach who has a proven track record in your preferred niche.

Cofer completed a program from the voiceover training and demo-production company Such A Voice, which she credits for helping her fast-track her transition into voice work.

Comprehensive training programs like these usually include weekly one-on-one coaching that targets articulation, character work, and the nuances of your preferred niche. Some packages also include training with demo production and audio-editing software, like Audacity.

The cost of training and equipment

Unfortunately, professional training costs money—often quite a bit of it. The same goes for the equipment you’ll need to buy if you want to set up a home studio.

“My initial investment was about $5,000,” Cofer said. This covered her demo production, coaching, and studio setup. “It took me probably about six months to recoup that money because it was a slow build—building my website, getting my social media presence, and establishing the business.”

Cofer warned that when beginners invest in a coach to produce their professional demos, they should avoid the industry’s common “demo trap.”

“The worst situation would be if you go through this initial investment, a coach helps you produce demos that sound amazing, but then you aren’t able to produce audio in your home studio at that same quality level. People are going to hire you based off your demo, and your home recordings have to match it.”

She also noted that demos have a shelf life. “I did mine back in 2022, and at this point, I’ve kind of outgrown them. Every artist at some point needs to redo their demos.”

Setting up your home studio: how much is too much?

Many beginners fall into the trap of spending thousands of dollars on high-end microphones and equipment before booking their first gig. Reid, whose setup includes a RØDE NT1, a DBX 286S preamp, and a Focusrite Scarlett interface, argued that expensive gear is overrated.

“The ‘secret’ to the absolute best sound is not buying the most expensive equipment,” he said. “A quiet, reverb-free, well-treated recording space is far more important than the price tag on your mic.”

Reid has completed projects where clients assumed he was using a $3,000 Neumann microphone, only to be shocked to learn it was a $300 RØDE. According to Reid, $300 to $500 is enough to get your foot in the door, but you will eventually need to spend around $1,000 to achieve true broadcast-quality sound.

Once you’ve developed your skills and recorded a demo, you still need to find clients.

For many freelancers, the most obvious place to look is Upwork, one of the largest freelancing websites in the world. There, clients post job listings, and freelancers submit proposals (essentially bids) to win the contract.

However, while the platform is very popular, not everyone is a fan.

Upwork operates on a pay-to-play model where freelancers must buy virtual tokens called Connects ($0.15 each) to submit proposals. 4

Because many jobs require roughly 10 to 30 Connects to apply, you may spend between $1.50 and $4.50 just to submit a single application, with no guarantee of landing the gig. The platform also allows freelancers to spend additional Connects to “boost” their bids and profiles to secure better visibility, which means the costs can add up.

Cofer and Reid hold vastly different opinions on whether this system remains a viable path for new voice talent.

The pro-Upwork view

Despite the cost, Cofer remains enthusiastic about Upwork and recommends jumping in “full steam” as a beginner. For her, spending money on Upwork’s paid features is a necessary cost of doing business.

“I spend about $50 a month … to keep my profile boosted and to boost proposals themselves,” she said.

She acknowledged that beginners might need to spend more when they’re starting from scratch, but maintained that you can still do a lot with that budget if you use the right strategies, like logging in multiple times a day to check for new jobs and keeping your “Available” badge active.

Crucially, Cofer said she doesn’t boost every proposal, only doing so when a “really juicy” project appears that perfectly matches her skills and vocal range. “Sometimes, I’ll boost it for 20 to 30 Connects if I really, really am motivated.”

Cofer emphasized that succeeding with this method requires consistent effort and that you should be realistic about the timeline you’ll need.

She dedicates 18 to 20 hours a week across 2 to 3 days to her business, and said building an operation may take “about three to four years of continuous effort and striving for growth, putting in the work.”

The anti-Upwork view

With over 300 completed jobs and more than $100,000 in earnings on Upwork, Reid has witnessed the platform’s evolution firsthand, and he cautions beginners against relying on it today.

“If I am going to be completely honest, I will say that I am not happy with the way Upwork is run today,” Reid said. “I would not recommend Upwork to any beginners.”

One of his biggest frustrations is the rising cost of Connects. When Reid first started, he said submitting an audition cost only 2 to 6 Connects. Now, he sees projects requiring as many as 50 Connects ($7.50) just to submit an audition.

“I used to be able to submit dozens of auditions for 100 Connects,” Reid said, adding that he has now stopped buying Connects altogether.

Instead, he lets his reputation do the work for him.

“I have a long list of repeat clients that come back to me regularly. New clients contact me directly now,” Reid said. “If I didn’t already have such a strong client base on Upwork, I would abandon it completely.”

Finding your own path

If you’re a part-time voice actor willing to treat platform fees as part of your baseline marketing budget, Upwork can still serve as a way to get clients. But for those who find the Connects system to be an increasingly unjustifiable gamble, relying on a single marketplace can be a risky strategy.

Rather than looking for a one-size-fits-all platform, you might want to try using multiple marketplaces in addition to Upwork—such as Fiverr and Voices123—along with direct outreach on professional networks like LinkedIn.

You can also build your own website with tools like Wix. You don’t need a fancy website in the beginning, Cofer told us, but having your own platform gives you more control over your branding and pricing.

Direct marketing to clients like local production houses allows you to bypass bidding fees and platform commissions entirely.

If you want to try Upwork, set a firm monthly limit on what you’ll spend on Connects and boosting features so you don’t drain your startup capital.

How to secure your first clients on Upwork

If you do choose to use Upwork, you’ll need to demonstrate your value over AI alternatives. Cofer recommends using the site’s video introduction feature.

“I think it has been a huge advantage to have a video of myself posted right on my profile,” she told us. “I introduce myself and come across as a real human being—one that is easy to work with and would love for you to reach out.”

In her video, Cofer talks about her passion for voice acting and lists her niches. “In this age of AI, it’s important to come through as a real human being with great communication skills, attention to detail, and excellent customer service,” she said.

Cofer also recommended adding as many projects as you can to your portfolio, and analyzing the profiles of active, successful voice actors in your niche to see how they structure their bios.

Live-directed recordings

Some voice actors offer remote, live-directed sessions where they invite clients to watch them record in real time using virtual meeting platforms like Zoom and provide instant feedback. Not everyone is comfortable working that way, and whether you are is up to you.

Other tips for your profile

In your profile, you might want to describe your voice to give clients a snapshot of your range. Cofer lists hers as “conversational,” but depending on your niche, you could go with something like “authoritative” or “confident,” along with listing your accent (e.g., American Male).

If you’re doing character work, you can list the archetypes you can do, such as “Friendly Guy Next Door” or “Femme Fatale.”

In your profile bio, you can also include your:

• Turnaround time
• Equipment
• Audio-production quality and ACX compliance
• Previous clients or recognizable brands you’ve worked with

You should also mention your fee structure. Cofer indicates on her profile that her rate includes the recording, editing, and mastering, but usage and licensing fees are a different matter, especially if you’re recording for broadcast over radio and TV.

With automated text-to-speech tools offering near-free narration, what is “too high” or “too low” can feel like a moving target.

To prevent a race to the bottom, many in the professional voiceover industry like Cofer rely on the Global Voice Acting Academy (GVAA) Rate Guide as a non-union standard. The guide calculates rates not just by the time spent in the booth, but by usage rights (i.e., where the audio will be played, how many people will hear it, and how long the client intends to use it).

When evaluating non-union professional work, the GVAA sets concrete baseline rates across several common genres.

For a national digital radio ad (e.g., a paid Spotify/Pandora/iHeart ad), for example, the GVAA rate guide advises:

• One month: $550–$700
• Three months: $750–$1,000
• One year: $1,500–$2,500

The session fee is meant to be included in those figures—about $250–$350 for a 60–90 minute session.

Cofer advises that beginners use the GVAA guidelines to build their own personalized rate card. This can include:

• Your base rate by genre (e.g., commercial, e-learning, narration)
• Session or per-finished-hour pricing
• Usage rights
• Any extra fees for services like live direction, revisions, and rush delivery

“It took me a solid year of doing projects to get a full understanding of what an appropriate price is,” said Cofer, who frequently uses her own rate card as a reference.

Educating the client on broadcast vs. non-broadcast usage fees

A major hurdle on platforms like Upwork is that many clients have no idea how voiceover pricing actually works.

“Some of the clients on there just really aren’t familiar with what a voiceover artist should be charging, or what’s an appropriate fee they should be paying for a broadcasted project,” Cofer told us. “I have to kind of explain to them, ‘No, you’re not going to get a full buyout on a regional TV commercial that’s running in perpetuity.’”

To navigate this, Cofer draws a strict line between broadcast and non-broadcast projects:

• Non-broadcast (e-learning, explainer videos, YouTube, social media): For these niches, “in perpetuity” usage (the client owning and using the files forever) is standard. Cofer charges a flat upfront price that she’s happy with.
• Broadcast (TV, Radio, commercial ads): Cofer never agrees to perpetuity for broadcast. Instead, she charges based on a set license (such as 1, 3, 6, or 12 months) and the size of the audience (local, regional, or national). If clients want to use it beyond that, she’ll charge them a contract renewal fee.

When clients post broadcast jobs on Upwork with vague details, Cofer uses her proposal to start a negotiation rather than locking herself into a cheap rate.

“I tell clients that I realize every project is different, and I want to align with their budget,” she said. “Once you develop a conversation with the client, you can find a price you’re both happy with that still aligns with your rate card.”

The danger of pricing “too low”

Cofer warns that trying to compete with cheap AI by dropping your rates below professional standards will hurt your growth. Over her four years in the industry, she has learned that cheap rates attract difficult clients.

“Those who want absolutely bare-bottom, bottom-of-the-barrel rates are the clients that sometimes go with AI voices,” she told us. “And honestly, those … have oftentimes been the most difficult to work with.”

Instead of undercharging out of fear, Cofer believes voice actors must value their own labor and substantial overhead costs.

“We as an industry need to hold the line. Stick to your guns, stick to your prices. You’re putting a lot of time and money into your training, your demos, and your coaching, and you’re putting a lot of energy and thought into your recording, editing, and mastering.”

Negotiating in the AI era

While the GVAA provides a concrete anchor, Michael Reid (who lists an $80/hour rate on his Upwork profile) pointed out that the reality of the market requires some flexibility on fixed-rate projects.

“Since an AI voice is so cheap, I do find myself settling for projects that pay less as opposed to holding out for the projects that can ‘afford me,'” he said. “These days, I ask clients what the budget is for the project and then try to work within that budget, instead of just telling them what my price is.”

These days, negotiating a lower rate to accommodate a tight client budget comes with a modern risk.

Some clients who post low-budget jobs are not actually looking for a standard, one-off voiceover. Instead, they pose as fronts for voice harvesting arrangements where buyers collect vocal data to train AI cloning models.

Other clients may be upfront about their intention to use your voice to train and develop AI voice models. Cofer says she tries hard to avoid this type of work.

Hidden voice harvesting can be hard to spot.

This was demonstrated in a 2024 class-action lawsuit filed by voice actors Paul Skye Lehrman and Linnea Sage against the AI startup Lovo.

While advertising their services on the freelance platform Fiverr, both actors were hired by anonymous clients who claimed the recordings were only for “test scripts” or “internal academic research.”

Instead, their recordings were used to train Lovo’s AI voice generator, which was later used to voice investor pitch videos, YouTube narration, and synthetic chatbots without their permission or compensation.5

How can you prevent your voice from getting cloned without your permission?

Unfortunately, there’s no way to stop bad actors from downloading your public demos or feeding the auditions you send into an AI tool, though you can also include a policy against it in your contract or platform bio.

Some voice actors use audio watermarking, like embedding a repeated beep that plays throughout the audio. Cofer says she sometimes adds music to her background, which has the added effect of making the audio sound more polished.

By and large, though, Cofer’s primary line of defense is keeping her auditions brief, especially when she offers clients custom auditions using part of their scripts.

“Recording a short piece of the audition is certainly a way to cut down that risk,” she said, going on to explain that she only reads a very small portion of the provided script so that clients do not receive a full, free recording.

The dilemma of whether to clone your own voice

The prevalence of synthetic voices (whether they’re sourced ethically or not) and the drop in beginner-friendly voice acting gigs has led some to question whether they should join forces with AI rather than resist it.

It’s possible to monetize your voice using AI technology. Platforms like ElevenLabs allow you to create and license official digital clones of your voice to earn passive income whenever a client uses your model.

Reid and Cofer have complex views on this practice.

Reid said that initially, he was fiercely opposed to the idea. “That was ‘siding with the devil’ as far as I was concerned,” he said. However, as synthetic tools have advanced, his perspective has shifted toward weary pragmatism.

“These days, I still have nothing good to say about it, but I do not blame the folks that are doing it,” he told us. “That is the direction, now. We may soon face a situation where we have to either get on board or get run out of town. I have not done it—yet.”

Cofer, on the other hand, remains skeptical of the technology’s long-term value, even if the financial compensation is fair. She believes that the human essence of voice work will keep the industry grounded.

“Feelings and emotions are conveyed to a degree that AI voices will never be able to fully achieve,” Cofer said.

The voice acting landscape in 2026 presents a tough challenge for newcomers. As Reid pointed out, the automated text-to-speech market is steadily consuming the entry-level jobs people relied on to get started just a few years ago.

But Cofer believes that the human voice is not obsolete. The best defense against an AI takeover may lie in your ability to offer more complex performances and character work.

If you can combine that with strong business management skills and a professional recording space, there might still be a profitable place for you, both on sites like Upwork and in the booth.
