If there’s one profession AI was expected to replace (other than writing), it’s translation.
Modern translation models can convert everything from emails to videos into dozens of languages. Google Translate has been around for years, but the emergence of large language models (LLMs) means machine-generated translations feel more natural than ever before.
For many aspiring freelancers, that raises an uncomfortable question. If machines can already translate for free, why would anyone hire a human translator?
The answer is more complicated than headlines suggest.
Rather than eliminating human translators, AI has changed what clients expect them to do. To understand how they’re surviving in this environment and how you can still build a profitable translation career, we spoke with Luz Angélica Acosta, a veteran translator who began her career on Upwork back when it was still called oDesk.
Here’s what she’s learned about navigating the platform, dealing with AI-generated drafts, and proving your value to clients.
