If you’ve visited a job board lately, you might have noticed that a lot of the postings don’t list a salary. This kind of pay secrecy can be frustrating and makes it hard to know whether a job application is worth your time.
Salary secrecy isn’t just a US problem. In many places around the world, employers love to keep their pay rates hidden. This gives them the upper hand when it comes to salary negotiations with new hires, and it’s also useful for avoiding pay envy among existing employees, who might kick up a fuss or even quit if they find that new employees are getting paid more than they are.
However, new laws being introduced in the US and EU could make it harder for employers to hide how much they pay—and considerably easier for workers to gauge how much they’re worth.
