Here are just a few of the reasons why you should use a tutoring platform:

• Existing user base of students: The biggest benefit of using an online tutoring site is getting access to a built-in user base of students who are actively looking for a new tutor. This takes a lot of the effort out of finding tutoring jobs and students.
• Virtual classroom: Every online tutor needs a virtual classroom to host their lessons, and this is a complimentary feature of most of the best online tutoring services. In this way, many of the best tutoring websites also double as apps for tutoring businesses.

“A lot of my students would actively promote me if I asked them to,” he said. If you’ve already got experience, you’ll earn more money by using your existing connections to find new clients, since online platforms often take a hefty cut of your earnings.

1. Superprof

Superprof is a global learning platform that began operations in 2013 and is based in France. It tops our list of tutoring platforms partly thanks to the relatively low commission it charges (at 0%–10%). It has also featured quite a bit on Reddit recently. Students from the platform have been talking about their learning experiences—which suggests that there’s demand for tutors—and tutors have also been sharing positive feedback regarding their experiences.

Superprof also has good reviews from happy tutors on Trustpilot this month. In general, it has an established reputation as one of the most popular and beloved online tutoring platforms.

Unlike most other tutoring platforms, Superprof allows you to arrange in-person tutoring sessions as well as online sessions.

Although you may be able to use this platform commission-free, you’ll pay in other ways. Specifically, you need to offer a free tutoring session to new students, so this is a consideration to factor in.

What you need to know about Superprof

• Subjects: You can choose from over 1,000 subjects on Superprof, including regular classroom subjects, hobby subjects (like chess, dance, and drawing), languages, and business subjects (like programming and Microsoft Excel).
• Students: Superprof caters to students of all ages, from elementary school students to adult working professionals.
• Requirements: You don’t need any teaching experience or credentials to sign up.
• Pay: You get to set your own rates, as long as they fall in the range of $20–$80 per hour. You can accept payments off the platform or get paid via PayPal through Superprof’s payment processor, with payments taking up to 3 days to reach your account.

2. Wizeprep

Wizeprep ranks among our top tutoring platforms for the second month in a row, with its major advantages including zero commission fees (meaning you keep all of your earnings) and potentially high hourly rates. The trade-off for these advantages is that Wizeprep is one of the more exclusive platforms out there, and not everyone will qualify. To be considered, you have to apply for a tutoring job when there are vacancies available.

However, plenty of people on Reddit say they’re using the platform to get tutoring services, which bodes fairly well for your chances of finding opportunities.

You also have to undergo training to get certified as a Wizeprep tutor. It’s unclear exactly what this consists of, but we contacted Wizeprep, and they claimed that this training was free of charge.

In addition to live tutoring, you also have the chance to prerecord lessons and receive a share of the revenue from students buying your videos.

What you need to know about Wizeprep

• Subjects: Wizeprep recruits tutors for many different subjects, including accounting, science, computer science, economics, engineering, finance, mathematics, and statistics.
• Students: Wizeprep is meant for older learners. You can teach high school and college students, as well as students who are planning on taking the LSAT and MCAT.
• Requirements: To start tutoring online for Wizeprep, you have to at least be in the process of studying for a bachelor’s degree.

Although it charges higher commission rates (of 25%), it has still been getting quite a lot of positive feedback on Reddit from tutors who use the platform. December was quite slow on the site, with relatively little tutoring work, but this was probably a general online tutoring problem than a Wyzant problem, and many tutors still recommend this platform for finding work.

Wyzant is a versatile tutoring platform that offers the chance to tutor online in a wide range of subjects. Considering the flexibility, low cost, and minimal requirements, there’s no reason not to sign up for Wyzant, even if you’re already using another tutoring platform.

The main drawback is that Wyzant will take a cut of what you earn—normally 25% of the lesson fee. They also charge extra fees to students on top of their normal lesson fees.

What you need to know about Wyzant

• Subjects: Wyzant offers classes in more than 300 subjects.
• Students: Wyzant is for all ages, from elementary school students to adults.
• Requirements: To work for Wyzant, you have to live in the US and have a Social Security number (which virtually always means you’ll need to be an American citizen). For each subject you want to teach, you’ll also have to pass a quiz with 8–20 multiple-choice questions.
• Pay: You get to set your own rates for private lessons.

4. italki

italki is a bit more limited that some other platforms on this list, as it focuses mainly on language learning. However, it still has a solid reputation among tutoring platforms.

You can use italki to teach your native language (or any that you have C2-level proficiency in). Just check their list of languages to see which options are currently available.

italki hires professional teachers, who require certification, and “community tutors,” who don’t. To be approved as a professional teacher, you’ll need an accredited language teaching certificate (e.g., CELTA, DELTA, TESOL, or TEFL for English tutors), a degree in language teaching, a teaching license, or proof of employment at a language teaching institution.

What you need to know about italki

• Subjects: italki is just for languages, and it currently has tutors for 150+ languages.
• Students: Anyone over 5 years old can take lessons on italki, so it’s good for tutoring either kids or adults.
• Requirements: Community tutors on italki don’t require any specific credentials. On the other hand, to become a professional teacher on italki, you’ll need an accredited language teaching certificate (CELTA, DELTA, TESOL, or TEFL), degree in English language teaching, teaching license, or proof of employment at a language teaching institution.
• Pay: You get to set your own rates, with a minimum of $5 per lesson for community tutors and $10 per lesson for professional teachers. You can get paid by PayPal, Hyperwallet, Payoneer, or bank transfer.

5. Tutor.com

Tutor.com is perhaps the most famous tutoring platform out there. You’ll find plenty of tutors who love the freedom and flexibility that Tutor.com offers, as well as many who complain about the low pay rates and minimum required “floating” hours.

The average tutoring session is quite short (just 20–25 minutes), so you won’t earn the full hourly rate for a single lesson. But these short lessons may make Tutor.com a good place to work online tutoring jobs part time.

What you need to know about Tutor.com

• Subjects: Tutor.com supports many different subjects. They recruit tutors for classes in math, science, languages, business, and more.
• Students: Tutor.com has students of ages and levels, ranging from K–12 to college, graduate school, and continuing education.
• Requirements: To claim Tutor.com jobs, you need to be eligible to work in the US and either have a 4-year degree or higher education level or be enrolled in college at a sophomore or higher grade level. You also have to pass an exam to prove that you know your chosen subject well enough to teach it.
• Pay: Tutor.com won’t tell you how much they’ll pay until you apply and pass their exam, although Glassdoor estimates tutor earnings to be around $15–$39 per hour. According to the Tutor.com website, rates depend on your subject and the quality of your teaching. The good news is that they have a set payment schedule, so you can be confident you’ll be paid on time.

6. Outschool

Outschool is an online teaching platform that’s ideal for experienced teachers who know who and what they want to teach. It’s a popular choice for homeschooling, and it offers teachers plenty of freedom and flexibility.

You can create your own classes on Outschool, so it’s technically possible to teach anything you like. One online teacher we spoke to, Ivana Winslow, mentioned that certain subjects on Outschool have a lot of competition, but the platform offers “room to build a business with a decent amount of autonomy.”

What you need to know about Outschool

• Subjects: Outschool has classes on all kinds of subjects, from mainstream ones like math and English to very esoteric ones like playing the ukulele and creating Minecraft mods.
• Students: Outschool caters to learners aged 3–18 years.
• Requirements: Outschool is a good option for those who want to become a teacher but don’t have formal teaching credentials, as the platform doesn’t ask for these. However, you have to pass a criminal background check and be a resident of the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or the UK.
• Pay: You can set the prices for your classes (and the number of participants). Outschool lets you list your services for free, but they’ll take a 30% fee each time a student signs up for your class. You’ll be paid every week.

7. Preply

Preply is one of the most popular platforms for ESL tutors. Its business model is designed to reward devoted tutors who are willing to invest a fair bit of time into their tutoring side hustle.

Preply won’t take a cut of your earnings on your first lesson. After that, you’ll start paying a 33% commission on your lessons. This eventually decreases to 18%.

What you need to know about Preply

• Subjects: Preply is mainly focused on language tutoring, and it’s one of the best places to find online English tutoring jobs. However, they also offer other school and university subjects as well as classes in various arts and crafts.
• Students: Preply is for learners of all ages—both adults and kids.
• Requirements: Preply has tutors for all kinds of languages in many different countries, and you don’t need a specific certification or teaching experience to teach with them. They also don’t specify that you need a background check (in general, tutoring sites that cater more to adult learners are less likely to require these).
• Pay: According to the Preply website, English tutors earn $15–$25 per hour on average.

8. Lessonface

Lessonface is one of the best tutoring platforms for tutors specializing in the arts, languages, or music. Tutors have the choice of offering one-on-one or group lessons, and you can even sell downloadable courses. The catch is that you do need to have teaching credentials or experience, depending on your subject matter.

For music and art subjects, you normally need at least 2 years of teaching experience or 5 years of professional experience related to the topic you’ll be teaching. Lessonface does note that they occasionally make exceptions to this, but only for people who are “extraordinary” (i.e., highly accomplished in their field).

To teach a language, you need to hold a teaching degree or relevant certification, have professional experience in teaching the language, and be able to speak it with native or near-native fluency.

What you need to know about Lessonface

• Subjects: Lessonface accepts music, art, and language tutors.
• Students: The Lessonface website says that their website caters to learners of all ages and levels.
• Requirements: Lessonface typically requires tutors to have teaching experience or a teaching credential, although they do make exceptions for particularly talented individuals.
• Pay: You get to set your own rates for private lessons, and you get paid every Friday through the platform.

9. Cambly

Cambly is one of the most well-known English teaching platforms out there. English is the only subject you can teach on Cambly, so it’s only a suitable option for English tutors.

Be warned: the pay rates on Cambly are very low. However, the requirements are minimal to become a tutor on Cambly, making it a good entry point for beginner tutors with no experience.

What you need to know about Cambly

• Subjects: Cambly is solely dedicated to English tutoring.
• Students: Cambly is for all ages. The main Cambly platform is primarily for adults, but they also run the platform Cambly Kids, which is for children aged 4–15 years.
• Requirements: Cambly’s requirements are fairly minimal. You don’t need a teaching certificate, a bachelor’s degree, or prior teaching experience. You don’t even need to be from the US. Their website says that “Cambly is powered by a community of friendly English tutors around the globe.”
• Pay: Cambly’s rates are comparatively low. You’ll make $0.17 per minute ($10.20 per hour) on Cambly and $0.20 per minute ($12.00 per hour) on Cambly Kids. Payments are deposited via PayPal every Monday.

10. Varsity Tutors

Varsity Tutors is another well-known tutoring platform that’s completely free to use. You can teach a range of subjects, either in the form of live classes or one-on-one sessions.

Some tutors have complained about the gap between what Varsity Tutors pays and what they charge students (claiming that they underpay their tutors). However, you may be able to negotiate your hourly rate when you sign up for the platform.

What you need to know about Varsity Tutors

• Subjects: Varsity Tutors claims that they cover more than 3,000 subjects, which gives you a lot of options, especially if your area of expertise is on the obscure side.
• Students: Classes are available for “kids, adults, and all levels of virtual learning.”
• Requirements: Varsity Tutors accept applications from tutors in the US and Canada. They don’t specify that you need a degree, just that you need to pass an “academic background check.” According to online reports, you’ll need to have a college degree or be working toward one.
• Pay: Varsity Tutors doesn’t specify the hourly rate they pay tutors, but online reports suggest that tutors earn an average of around $20 per hour.

11. TutorOcean

TutorOcean is a global tutoring marketplace operating out of Ottawa, Canada. It may not be the most well-known tutoring site, but it’s definitely worth considering.

Some of the features that make TutorOcean stand out include the wide range of subjects available and the option to bring in your current students for lower fees. Ultimately, it’s the best choice if you’re looking for a digital solution for hosting sessions and processing payments rather than a way to connect with new students.

What you need to know about TutorOcean

• Subjects: There’s no shortage of subjects you can teach on TutorOcean. You can choose from traditional classroom subjects like math and science or tutor in languages, business subjects, or even hobby subjects like chess or musical instruments.
• Students: You’ll find a diverse pool of students on this site, from K-12 students to university students and even business professionals or parents looking for guidance.
• Requirements: To qualify as a tutor, you need to prove that you have an undergraduate degree or high education level or that you are currently enrolled in a college course.
• Pay: You have the freedom to set your own rates on TutorOcean. The platform will process your payments within 48 hours, and you’ll see the money in your bank account within 7 days. You’ll get paid via Stripe or PayPal.

There’s no easy answer to the question of which is the best tutoring website. This is because it all depends on your background, goals, and needs. The best tutor platform for someone who’s primarily looking for a place to find new students will be different from the best tutoring software for an experienced tutor who wants to move their tutoring business online.

When making your choice about which platform to use, take these factors into consideration:

• Tutor requirements: Some tutor platforms only accept tutors with a college degree, teaching certification, or other credentials. Assess your qualifications and then rule out websites that won’t apply to you.

To be able to charge high tutoring fees, you’ll need extensive tutoring or teaching experience and advanced knowledge in your area of expertise. But even if you pick a platform that takes a cut, you can adjust your rates to get whatever hourly pay you want.
