X26/27Youth Development Assistant I-Pooled Position (Extended Day)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Supports the social, emotional, physical, and developmental growth of students participating in the Extended Day Program. Actively supervises and engages groups of students in safe, enriching, and developmentally appropriate activities; builds positive relationships with students; models positive behavior; and works collaboratively with Extended Day staff to ensure the safety, accountability, engagement, and well-being of all students.  

SUPERVISION 

Work is performed under the direct supervision of an Extended Day Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor and may receive day-to-day direction from designated site leadership. Incumbent has no employee supervision responsibilities. Employees actively supervise and engage students in program activities and provide group or individualized support as appropriate. 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level position in the Extended Day series and provides opportunities to develop foundational knowledge and skills in positive youth development, programming, behavior support, student engagement, and promoting safety.

Students, parents/guardians, Extended Day employees, school-based staff and administrators, and other APS Extended Day stakeholders. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

• Actively supervises and engages groups of students during all program activities, transitions, arrival and dismissal, indoor and outdoor activities, and other program routines to ensure student safety and accountability. 
• Builds positive, supportive relationships with students and serves as a positive role model while promoting social-emotional and developmental skills. 
• Assists with the planning, preparation, and facilitation of engaging, developmentally appropriate enrichment activities 
• Encourages student participation, choice, exploration, positive peer relationships, and development of new interests and skills through program activities. 
• Uses positive, developmentally appropriate behavior-support strategies; reinforces program expectations; redirects behavior when necessary; and seeks assistance from site leadership when additional support is needed. 
• Provides group and individualized student support as assigned, including supporting students with disabilities and other individual needs in accordance with established plans, procedures, and staff direction. 
• Assists students with homework and provides appropriate academic support during designated program periods. 
• Participates in program setup, cleanup, field trips, outdoor activities, and other activities necessary for daily program operations. 
• Participates in required professional development, coaching, and training to strengthen youth development, programming, behavior-support, safety, and student-engagement practices. 
• May perform routine first aid as required. 
• Performs related work as required or assigned. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of or ability to learn basic principles and practices of positive youth development, child and adolescent development, behavior support, and group supervision. 
• Ability to build positive and supportive relationships with children and youth and serve as an appropriate role model. 
• Ability to actively supervise groups of students and maintain student safety and accountability in a dynamic program environment. 
• Ability to assist with the planning and facilitation of engaging, developmentally appropriate activities that support student interests, skills, relationships, and social-emotional development. 
• Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to student behavioral, social-emotional, developmental, and individual support needs. 
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and receive coaching, feedback, and direction from site leadership. 
• Ability to communicate effectively with all APS Extended Day stakeholders and to carry out oral and written instructions. 

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

• Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and experience working or volunteering with youth.  
• Preferred: Relevant college coursework or training.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

• Ability to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to move freely and safely throughout indoor and outdoor program areas to actively supervise children during play and activities.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and respond promptly to the needs and safety of children in a dynamic environment.

Salary range: $21.55 to $32.34 hourly, based on the 26/27 pay plan.
