The Nutrition Technician/NDTR provides nutrition screening, education, breastfeeding support, referrals, and related services to WIC participants under the direction of the Program Nutritionist and WIC Program leadership. The position ensures services are provided in accordance with federal and state WIC regulations, policies, procedures, and scope of practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conducts WIC eligibility, health, and nutrition screenings.
Identifies and documents nutrition risks and refers high-risk participants to the Program Nutritionist as appropriate.
Provides individualized nutrition education and counseling within scope of practice.
Assigns WIC food packages in accordance with program policies or refers to the Program Nutritionist when required.
Explains WIC benefits, participant rights and responsibilities, authorized foods, and use of the WIC EBT Card.
Provides breastfeeding education, assessment, encouragement, and ongoing support.
Determines breast pump eligibility and provides pump education, training, and follow-up.
Refers participants to healthcare providers, lactation professionals, and community resources as appropriate.
Provides prenatal and breastfeeding education and support within the scope of practice.
Performs intake, answers phones, schedules appointments, greets participants, and prepares required paperwork as needed.
Assists with nutrition education materials, student/intern training, audits, quality assurance, and program evaluations.
Participates in staff meetings, nutrition planning, training, conferences, and professional development.
Collaborates with Program Nutritionist, WIC staff, healthcare providers, and community partners to meet participant needs.
Performs other duties as assigned to support the effective operation of the WIC Program.
Travel / Work Environment
The position is primarily based in WIC clinics and may require travel between Gateway CAP WIC locations and community sites.
Education
Associate degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Or Completion of an ACEND-accredited Dietetic Technician program or qualifying nutrition and dietetics coursework.
Experience
At least one year of previous WIC or public health nutrition experience preferred.
Experience working with women, infants, children, and families is a plus.
Bilingual/multilingual skills is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of nutrition, maternal and child nutrition, breastfeeding, and public health.
Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to provide culturally responsive, participant-centered services.
Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
