PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Salary to be commensurate with experience. 

The hiring range for this position is $33.33 - $41.66 per hour.

This is classified as VHBE (Variable Hour Benefit Eligible), where the selected candidate can work up to 40 hours per week.  The selected candidate will be eligible to elect Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits, accrue paid time off, and receive 11 paid holidays.

Overview of Department / Position:

Aurora Water's Mission Statement is to enhance and protect the quality of life for Aurora citizens by providing safe, dependable and sustainable water, sewer and stormwater services, today and in the future.

The Water Services Specialist provides customer service and field support to contractors, property developers, and Aurora Water employees. Represents the City of Aurora by overseeing and verifying contractor-performed testing of new domestic and fire suppression water lines to help ensure water quality and protection of the public water supply. Oversees and documents water line disinfection, flushing, pressure testing, and bacteriological sampling activities in accordance with Aurora Water standards and policies.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Oversees testing as it relates to new water lines.
• Oversees high chlorination line fills, flushes, pressure tests and clear waters.
• Maintains and updates records in INFOR, OneBook, AMANDA, etc.
• Provides customer service, responds to customers and contractors; and assists in departmental discussions.
• Collects bacteriological tests, pre-control testing, determines chlorine residual, and provides samples for the water quality lab.
• Analyzes chlorine levels in the distribution system.
• Operates and maintains assigned equipment, utility structures, and various equipment.
• Ensures compliance with Aurora Water policies, procedures, standards, and applicable AWWA standards
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a water distribution system that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 

Education:  

• High School Diploma or GED.

Experience:  

• At least three years of related water utility maintenance in water distribution, collection operation, or water treatment.  

Licenses and Certifications Required:   

• Driver's license with a good driving history. 

Knowledge:

• Knowledge of water distribution and disinfection process. 

• Understanding of Aurora Water Standards and Specifications.  
• Understanding of AWWA.  

• Knowledge of fire protection standards and NFPA.  

• Understanding of Windows-based programs  

Skills:   

• Strong interpersonal skills. 
• Competent in common computer tasks.   
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.  
• Practice and techniques of assigned maintenance functions.  

Abilities

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and contractors. 
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Essential Personnel:   

• When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the city, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. 

Physical Demands: 

• Moderate physical work that may involve moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance at any given time.   
• May require frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing.   
• Frequent or continuous moderate physical work depending upon assigned function.   
• May require frequent bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing.  
• Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of tools, equipment, and vehicles.  
• Clear vision to read manuals and other written documents, to use computers, laptops, and tablets, record data, and monitor/observe instruments and gauges.  
• Hearing/listening for troubleshooting and warning signals.  
• Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens and to provide technical information.  

Work Environment: 

• Works outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions. 
• Works around construction equipment, traffic, noise, dust, mud, and water 

Equipment Used: 

• Uses standard office equipment including personal computer, laptop, tablet, and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and maintenance management system to track time and activities.
• Operates tools, equipment, and vehicles common to water disinfection and water line testing, such as pocket chlorometer, low flow testing apparatus, valve keys, and various chemicals and reagents.
• This job may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment. 

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
