Volunteer Services Intern Student Worker (CSLP FWS)

Position Summary/Purpose: Grand Canyon University (GCU) maintains relationships with nonprofit organizations identified by the IRS as 501(c)(3) by virtue of their charitable programs. The collective mission of 501(c)(3) organizations in the Phoenix Valley is to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to those residents’ needs.

GCU maintains a partnership with the American Red Cross located at 4747 N. 22nd Street, Suite 100, Phoenix, AZ, 85016. Their mission is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers. The CSLP student worker’s work schedule is dependent on the hours of operations and needs of the American Red Cross; however, they may not work more than 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e., fall/spring). If eligible, CSLP student workers can work during summer (i.e., May – August).

CSLP: This position has been reviewed and approved as Community Service as defined by 34 CFR 675.2(b). Per 34 CFR 675.2(b), community services are defined as, “Services which are designed to improve the quality of life for community residents, particularly low-income individuals, or to solve particular problems related to their need.” These services must be open and accessible to the community.

As an FWS-CSLP approved position, its services will be offered to non-GCU community members (i.e., local residents).

Primary Responsibilities /Accountabilities/ Essential Functions:

This internship offers a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact while exploring career interests in a mission-driven environment.

To begin your internship, you must attend an American Red Cross Orientation.

1. Administrative Support

• Perform data entry and maintain accurate records.
• Assist with roster management and tracking.
• Update and maintain website content.
• Develop, organize, and maintain documents, reports, presentations, databases, and other materials that support team initiatives and operations.
• Provide general administrative support as needed.

2. Outreach and Recruitment

• Conduct outreach to prospective volunteers and assist with initial screening activities.
• Schedule, coordinate, and support recruitment events.
• Attend recruitment and community engagement events as needed.
• Assist in building and maintaining positive relationships with volunteers and community partners.

3. Projects and Program Support

• Develop professional skills through hands-on assignments, research, planning, analysis, and project support activities.
• Support Focus Community initiatives and special events.
• Assist with program planning, coordination, and implementation efforts.
• Contribute innovative ideas and recommendations to improve processes, programs, and participant experiences.
• Participate in special projects aligned with organizational goals and priorities.

4. Networking and Collaboration

• Collaborate, both in person and virtually, with staff, volunteers, and fellow interns to share ideas, solve problems, and achieve project objectives.
• Communicate professionally with staff, volunteers, community partners, and other stakeholders.
• Participate in trainings, team meetings, and networking opportunities to expand knowledge, build professional relationships, and gain valuable career experience.

Qualifications:

• Have passion and willingness to help others succeed.
• Possess strong ethics, integrity, and sense of responsibility.
• Must have reliable transportation.
• Represent the American Red Cross with professionalism, compassion, and respect while interacting with volunteers, donors, clients, and community partners.
• Previous Mentoring a plus.
• Ability to speak a second language a plus.

Experience/Education:

Grand Canyon University is committed to a student first policy. Therefore, all applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered for student employment:

•  Enrolled at GCU in a bachelor’s program or master’s program full-time during fall/spring or half-time during summer.
• Maintain a 2.0 GPA as a Bachelor level student or a 3.0 GPA as a Master level student.
• Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the University.

You may be subject to termination if you fall below the minimum requirements.

Pay Rate: Minimum Wage
