The Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College invites applications for its inaugural Visiting Scholar Program. The program offers one Ph.D. -- or equivalent terminal-degree holding -- scholar the opportunity to spend the Fall 2027 semester in residence at Keene State College (New Hampshire). The successful candidate will join a robust community of scholars and educators active in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College.  

The Visiting Scholar will contribute to Keene State College in two core areas. First, as a member of the Cohen Institute staff and reporting to the Institute Director, the scholar will be engaged in the Institute’s programming and contribute to its mission through public-facing events. This staff member will work with other Institute team members to design and implement events and other programs related to the Visiting Scholar's area(s) of expertise. One of these offerings will be a public lecture related to the scholar’s expertise. Additional possibilities might include a professional development workshop for educators, a webinar series, special events for undergraduate students, and/or more. The Visiting Scholar will also help to grow the Institute’s professional network and will support other Institute events throughout the fall semester. 

Second, the Visiting Scholar will be required to teach one undergraduate special topics course in the Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. The topic for this course is subject to department and dean approval, and the Visiting Scholar will report to the dean for all matters related to their teaching. 

The scholar selected for this position will receive $29,647 in total compensation (combined pay and fringe) for their work in the staff position and an additional $3,642 in total compensation (combined pay and fringe) for their teaching role. These numbers are estimated based on current adjunct pay rates. The scholar will also be granted office space and access to the Keene State College library and archival holdings. 

For the Fall 2027 program, eligibility for this program is limited to scholars who are legal residents of the United States. We are especially interested in applications from scholars who hold expertise in areas outside of the Holocaust. The purpose of this program is to draw additional areas of expertise and disciplinary approaches to Keene State College rather than duplicating existing strengths. The Visiting Scholar would be required to be in residence in the Monadnock region from at least August 16, 2027, until December 21, 2027. 

Eligibility

Applicants to the Cohen Institute’s Visiting Scholars Program must: 

• Possess a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree by the time of their projected start date; 

• Demonstrate an active scholarly interest in topics related to Holocaust Studies and/or Genocide Studies; 

• Have the ability to work in the U.S. on an unrestricted basis. We are not able to provide sponsorships for applicants.

Visiting Scholar (Adjunct Staff) - Job Summary

This limited-term position is housed within the Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College. This staff member reports to the Institute’s director and will work with other members of the Cohen Institute team to design and implement public-facing events/programs related to their area of expertise.

Duties/Responsibilities

Program Design and Delivery (50%)

• Design and implement events and programs related to their areas of expertise. This includes developing materials associated with each offering. Examples of such offerings might include: a professional development workshop for educators, webinars with experts from across the nation/globe, special events for undergraduate students, an interview for the Cohen Institute’s podcast, and/or more.

• Craft and deliver one public-facing lecture on a topic related to expertise.

• Coordinate planning for these events and programs with Cohen Institute team members and relevant partners throughout USNH and/or KSC (e.g., Marketing, Archives, academic departments, etc.)

• Attend meetings with Director and Cohen Institute team members to facilitate planning.

• Follow Cohen Institute protocols for team communications and task management each day.

Support for Additional Institute Offerings (45%)

• Attend and support additional events hosted by the Cohen Institute (e.g., the Holocaust Memorial Lecture, the New England Regional Conference on Holocaust and Genocide Studies, etc.). This may include assisting with registration at events, facilitating Q&A sessions, and/or providing additional logistical support.

• Serve as an ambassador of the Institute by promoting events and programs to professional networks.

Additional Duties (5%)

• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

• Doctorate or other equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field of study

• Academic background in Holocaust and Genocide Studies (as demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or other means)

• Record of success in in-person teaching at the College/University level (could be as a teaching assistant)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Demonstrated time management and organizational skills

• Previous success with managing multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines

• Competency in current computer technologies (e.g., Microsoft 365, Zoom, etc.)

• Ability to work with diverse groups and stakeholders

• Ability to maintain confidentiality

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in a higher educational setting.

• Lead-instructor teaching experience at the College/University level (in-person).

• Demonstrated success with past event or program planning.

• Knowledge of and ability to use learning management systems (e.g., Canvas)

Applications must be submitted by December 4, 2026, to be given full consideration by the selection committee. Interviews are planned to take place via Zoom in January 2027 and applicants will be notified of the Institute’s final decision no later than March 2027.

• A cover letter, including a statement addressing why the Cohen Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies is an appropriate setting for their work. This letter should also address the specific ideas that the applicant has for public-facing events as well as what they hope to gain from the Visiting Scholar experience. 

• A brief description of the proposed special topics course they would teach within the Department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, including: a summary of the course, the course outcomes, and a proposed reading list. Please note that this would be offered as a special topics course for undergraduate students. An ideal course would be one that expands beyond the Department’s current offerings to contribute new geographic or other expertise to our undergraduates’ studies. A list of existing courses in the department can be provided upon request. The course topic and description require approval from the academic dean and department members. 

• A current C.V.
