Vice President of Underwriting

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Vice President of Underwriting based in United States.

This is a senior leadership opportunity to shape underwriting strategy, risk management, and profitability across a growing health insurance organization.
You will oversee underwriting functions spanning fully insured and self-funded health plans, stop-loss, ancillary, and specialty products.
The role combines strategic direction with operational oversight, pricing discipline, regulatory compliance, and team development.
You will work closely with Sales, Actuarial, Finance, Claims, Compliance, and Executive Leadership to balance sustainable growth with disciplined risk selection.
Your expertise will help strengthen pricing methodologies, risk frameworks, underwriting performance, and market positioning.
You will also lead initiatives to improve workflows, automation, analytics, consistency, and turnaround times across underwriting operations.
This position is suited to an experienced underwriting leader who can build high-performing teams while maintaining strong financial and regulatory discipline.

Accountabilities:

• Develop and execute an enterprise underwriting strategy aligned with growth, profitability, and risk management objectives.
• Establish underwriting guidelines, risk tolerance frameworks, pricing methodologies, and governance standards.
• Oversee underwriting profitability and loss ratio performance across relevant lines of business.
• Maintain pricing integrity for fully insured and self-funded medical plans, stop-loss, ancillary, and specialty products.
• Monitor key underwriting metrics including hit ratios, margin performance, risk scoring accuracy, and renewal outcomes.
• Partner with Actuarial and Finance teams on rate setting, forecasting, risk pool analysis, and financial performance.
• Lead, mentor, and scale high-performing underwriting teams across new business, renewals, large group, and small group functions.
• Optimize underwriting workflows, automation tools, data analytics, and operational processes to improve accuracy and efficiency.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen turnaround times and consistency across regions and teams.
• Ensure underwriting activities comply with applicable federal and state requirements, including ACA, ERISA, HIPAA, and Department of Insurance requirements.
• Maintain audit-ready documentation, governance practices, and appropriate underwriting controls.
• Partner with Legal and Compliance teams to evaluate regulatory changes and their impact on underwriting strategy.
• Collaborate with Sales and Account Management to balance commercial growth with disciplined risk selection.
• Work with Claims leadership to identify utilization trends and emerging risk patterns.
• Support broker and consultant relationships for large, complex, or strategically important cases.

Requirements:

• Deep experience with both self-funded and fully insured health plan underwriting.
• Strong understanding of stop-loss, level-funded, ancillary, and specialty insurance products.
• Demonstrated experience with underwriting P&L responsibility and financial performance management.
• Strong knowledge of applicable federal and state healthcare regulations and insurance compliance requirements.
• Proven ability to develop, lead, and scale high-performing underwriting teams.
• Strong understanding of pricing, risk selection, loss ratios, renewals, and underwriting performance metrics.
• Experience collaborating effectively with Actuarial, Finance, Sales, Claims, Legal, Compliance, and executive stakeholders.
• Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to translate risk and market data into actionable decisions.
• Excellent communication and relationship-management skills, including the ability to engage senior leaders, brokers, and consultants.
• Strong operational mindset with experience improving processes, workflows, technology adoption, and data-driven underwriting capabilities.
• Ability to balance growth objectives with risk discipline, regulatory requirements, and long-term profitability.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, decision-making, and organizational skills.
