Underwriter

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Underwriter III based in the United States.

This role is responsible for underwriting a broad range of residential mortgage loan products while ensuring sound risk assessment and regulatory compliance.
You will independently review loan files, evaluate borrower financial information, and make underwriting decisions based on established standards.
The position covers conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, new construction, condominium, and other specialized loan programs.
You will work closely with Loan Processors and Loan Officers to resolve documentation gaps and move applications toward completion.
As a senior-level underwriting resource, you will also handle complex escalations and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
The role requires strong judgment, attention to detail, regulatory knowledge, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, metrics-driven environment.
You will operate with a high degree of independence while serving as a subject matter expert when senior underwriting leadership is unavailable.

Accountabilities:

• Review and evaluate mortgage loan documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company, federal, agency, state, and local requirements.
• Underwrite conventional, FHA, VA, USDA, new construction, condominium project, and other assigned mortgage loan products according to applicable underwriting and investor standards.
• Analyze loan-to-value ratios, debt-to-income ratios, credit reports, applications, income, assets, down payment sources, and supporting documentation to assess creditworthiness and identify potential fraud or misrepresentation.
• Review property appraisals to ensure loans meet applicable secondary market, investor, and internal requirements.
• Identify missing or insufficient documentation and work with Loan Processors and Loan Officers to obtain the information required to complete loan packages.
• Determine when additional documentation or information is necessary to support sound loan decisions and request it accordingly.
• Approve or deny loan applications based on underwriting standards, regulatory requirements, risk factors, and supporting documentation.
• Provide borrowers with appropriate options and recommendations regarding available loan programs.
• Verify the accuracy of system inputs and ensure internal systems are consistent with the applicable Automated Underwriting System (AUS).
• Stay current on mortgage regulations, agency guidelines, investor requirements, and industry trends that may affect underwriting and compliance decisions.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for complex underwriting questions and escalated issues raised by junior-level team members.
• Exercise independent judgment and discretion when resolving high-complexity underwriting matters.
• Provide guidance and knowledge-sharing support to less experienced teammates as needed.
• Maintain a strong customer-service approach while collaborating with internal stakeholders throughout the loan process.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or technical training in Business, Finance, Accounting, Legal, or a related field is preferred.
• At least 5 years of recent experience in the mortgage industry, including substantial experience underwriting conventional, FHA, VA, Bond Program, jumbo, or permanent/one-time close loans.
• Current Direct Endorsement (DE) certification is required.
• Current certifications required for assigned regions with applicable state-specific requirements to originate or supervise loans, including Direct, VA, Auto, and SAR endorsements.
• Expert-level knowledge of mortgage lending processes, including underwriting, funding, and loan processing.
• Expert-level knowledge of documentation used in consumer mortgage applications, including tax returns, financial statements, verification of income and deposits, and related financial records.
• Expert-level understanding of mortgage underwriting standards, federal and state regulations, agency requirements, and internal controls.
• Strong critical-thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate facts and data, draw sound conclusions, and assess downstream impacts and associated risks.
• Ability to exercise a high degree of independent judgment and discretion, particularly when handling complex or escalated issues.
• Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, metrics-driven environment.
• Strong sense of urgency, responsiveness, and follow-through.
• Intermediate mathematical skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel, as well as collaborative cloud-based platforms, knowledge-management tools, and third-party software applications.

• Ability to work primarily in a sedentary, computer-based environment with frequent keyboard and mouse use.

• Hourly compensation of $36.14–$54.21 USD, with the final rate influenced by factors such as education, experience, applicable wage requirements, and geographic location.
