Trainee (Claims, LC, PA & UW)

SUMMARY:

This is an entry level position that is part of a formal training program. This job is foundational and expected to be a starting point within a specific discipline (Claims, Loss Control, and Underwriting) and is expected to last up to one year. 

Upon completion of the training program the trainee is expected to be familiar with the department policies, processes, procedures, and terminology related to the job. In addition, the trainee will be proficient in the job responsibilities and tasks of the progressive positions within the career path. The trainee will be evaluated on their progress during the training period and on successful completion of the training plan. Upon satisfactory completion of training, the trainee will be eligible for a targeted position within the career path. 

RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS:

In a Learning Capacity:

• Learn and develop skills and competencies from performance of assigned duties.
• Learn and develop skills and competencies in the use of systems, software, and programs.
• Research and analyze information within the assigned area (Claims, Loss Control, Underwriting)
• Work on special projects as assigned.
• Compute and provide reports, attend company meetings, and provide feedback to the appropriate supervisor(s).
• Works with all internal departments to resolve problems and maintain company relations.

• Participates as necessary on special committees and task forces.

Claims: 

• Perform assigned training tasks including specific Claims assignments and assignments designed to introduce the incumbent(s) to all key aspects of the Company.
• Learn and develop skills and competencies related to Claims including verifying workers compensation coverage of employer and injured employee from policy information, determining whether the reported injury is compensable under workers compensation, determining medical causal relationship between employee injury and accident, and manage and approve medical bill payments for non-indemnity and simple indemnity claims.

• Under supervision of Claims Leadership, responsible for applying claims principles, knowledge and skills based on experience.

Loss Control:

• Identify potential hazardous conditions and unsafe acts that may have an adverse impact on employee claims and assist the client in reducing or eliminating those hazardous condition or unsafe acts. Review business processes and operations. Make recommendations for best practices in safety.
• Research and analyze technical information, specifications, type of equipment, legal standards, and losses, etc. Write and summarize technical information into practical, usable reports.
• Train and/or make presentations to customers on loss prevention and safety related topics by participating in internal and external meetings. Make presentations to internal/external staff as needed.
• Gather and communicate pertinent safety information to assist in the risk selection part of the underwriting process. 

• Maintain strong relationships with independent agents to discuss new and existing clients, specific account loss control reports, analysis, and loss reduction recommendations and to respond to any agent concerns, questions, or issues.

Premium Audit:

• Learn to perform telephone, mail and field audits.
• Learn to collect all pertinent data and documents needed.
• Learn to calculate policyholder’s premium liability.
• Learn relevant laws and regulations and develop a strong understanding of state specific requirements.
• Learn to utilize knowledge of automated systems.
• Enter and/or research information in computer system.
• Learn operations, processes, policies, lingo and procedures.
• Review and process requests.
• Respond to internal and external customer inquiries.
• Develop strong analytical skills with and attention to detail.
• Observe auditors performing audits and progress towards assisting and conducting audits on your own.
• Performs clerical tasks including answering telephone, faxing, filing, copying, and mail distribution. May generate letters, forms, and/or reports.

Underwriting:

• Calculates, prepares and develops premium quotations using corporate underwriting guidelines within letter of authority
• Determines underwriting eligibility for prospective policyholders and develops appropriate pricing for new business, renewals, and endorsements
• Analyzes and reviews prospective accounts for insurability and accepts or rejects within letter of authority.
• Supports agency relationships.
• Develops new business and retention of existing business in a given territory or region.
• Explains and emphasizes benefit of workers’ compensation insurance products and services to customers (agents and policyholders).
• Analyze accounts to determine exposure and proper pricing

• Reviews loss trends and develops action plans to correct problem areas

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:

A variety of assessments may be utilized as part of the selection process.

EDUCATION OR EQUIVALENT EXPERIENCE:   

Claims: 

Associate’s in related field and certification (such as AIC, CPCU) required; or a Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Course work in medical terminology is desired. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

Loss Control: 

Associates in related field and certification (such as ARM, CPCU, AU) required; or a Bachelor’s degree in related field required.  Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

Premium Audit:

Associate’s degree in accounting, finance or related field. Progress towards, or completion of industry-recognized professional designations (i.e. APA, IIA, AIU, CPCU, ARM) highly preferred. Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

Underwriting/Business Development:

Associates in related field and certification (such as ARM, CPCU, AU) required; or a Bachelor’s degree in related field required.  Continuous learning required, as defined by the Company’s learning philosophy. Certification, or progress toward, highly preferred and encouraged.

EXPERIENCE:

With proper education, no experience is required. One-year of relevant experience in an insurance environment or knowledge of worker’s compensation is desired. Bi-lingual skills in speaking, writing, or reading English and Spanish are desired.

Underwriting/Business Development: Agency Management and marketing experience is preferred.

• Ability to perform other assignments at locations outside of the office.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work is performed in the office and occasionally in the field with minimal hazards.  Minimal travel is required with occasional overnight stays (Loss Control and Underwriting/BD). 

Additional Working Conditions for Loss Control and Underwriting/BD: 

Work is performed primarily in the field.  However, may be required to visit customer locations which may present some unusual hazards.  Frequent travel, primarily by auto, is required with overnight stays.  Ability to lift and carry computer equipment weighing up to 35 lbs. Must possess a valid driver's license with a record that meets corporate standards. 

Additional Working Conditions for Loss Control: 

Work is required at various times of the day and sometimes weekend work may be required.   Must be able to meet general physical requirements that would allow the incumbent the ability to view and participate in account operations which may include climbing ladders and scaffolding, work in confined spaces, and or other similar situations.

PAY RANGE

Actual compensation decision relies on the consideration of internal equity, candidate’s skills and professional experience, geographic location, market and other potential factors. It is not standard practice for an offer to be at or near the top of the range, and therefore a reasonable estimate for this role is between $44,100 and $50,775.
