Temporary Inventory Specialist

Job Description Summary:

Manage the property owned by the Sheriff’s Office by maintaining a written assessment of purchased, transferred and surplus property; oversee property accounting, inventories, transfers, storage and re-utilization and property disposals; perform other duties as assigned.

Starting salary is $40.57 per hour and the position is part-time.
The Temporary Inventory Specialist position has opportunities for overtime and comp time.

Job Description:

Essential Functions:

Manage the operation of the Agency’s inventory system.

Maintain the property records of all Agency assets and affix numbered inventory tags as appropriate.

Coordinate and initiate the necessary actions for physical inventories; reconcile physical inventories to inventory records.

Record, monitor and perform cyclic or annual check of Agency assets. 

Conduct location surveys, spot checks and random samplings to ensure validity of inventory.

Oversee the inter-agency transfer of property, approve disposals and prepare surplus.

Assist in the evaluation and determination of property items that are unserviceable and not economical to repair.

Evaluate serviceable property items that are no longer needed and prepare paperwork for disposal and surplus.

Monitor the procurement of new assets to ensure they are recorded in the Agency inventory system.

Conduct periodic audits to validate use, numbered tags, locations and safeguarding methods.

Draft policies and provide procedural guidance to the Agency regarding property accounting, inventories, re-utilization and final disposal.

Keep supervisor and relevant others informed of issues in a timely fashion. Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with vendors, agency and County staff.

Keep informed on current inventory practices and procedures and the management of Agency assets by attending workshops and educational programs or reading specialized literature.

Attend meetings and participates in various teams when needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff's Office to the public.

Thorough knowledge of current inventory management practices and procedures and the management of Agency assets and ability to interpret them to staff.

Ability to effectively and efficiently research, purchase, organize, track and maintain Agency assets.

Ability to establish priorities and organize workload effectively and efficiently to accommodate numerous deadlines.

Ability to coordinate the work of diverse staff in order to accomplish Agency goals and objectives.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff; successfully communicate with vendors, and members of the public and work as a team.

Ability to maintain a pleasant and productive working atmosphere.

Ability to operate relevant computer systems including hardware and software (MS Word, Excel, Access) and office machines.

Education and Experience:

Must have a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education

Must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in property management, inventory management or a closely related field.

Selected Candidate:

Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no convictions for DUI.

Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam.

Must provide handwriting sample for review.

Must appear before and receive favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.

Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and interpersonal skills. Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.
