Temporary ASL Interpreter Pool

Under the general supervision of the Pepperdine Office of Student Accessibility (OSA), the Temporary ASL Interpreter provides professional sign language interpreting services to facilitate seamless communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students, faculty, staff, and campus guests. This role facilitates real-time communication across a wide range of academic, co-curricular, and university-wide settings.

Duties

• Academic Support:
  • Provide ASL interpretation services to facilitate communication between DHH students, peers, instructors, and staff, including classroom instruction, discussions, school events, meetings, and assemblies.
  • Support and adapt instructional materials for DHH students in various subjects under the direction of the teacher.
  • Convey auditory environmental cues (e.g., bells, alarms, computer signals) to DHH students.
• Co-Curricular & On-Call Support:
  • Interpret school events, meetings, and assemblies.
  • Provide interpretation services to facilitate communication between DHH clients.
  • Support administrative tasks to adapt instructional materials for DHH clients.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Uphold University mission through work performed.

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

• Certification with a Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 4.0 or above.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and other communication methods used by DHH individuals.
• Knowledge of and adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
• Ability to interpret and transliterate fluently between spoken/written English and sign language.
• Fluency with interpretation techniques, including sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign translation.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both spoken and written English.
• Understanding of child development, behavior characteristics, and best practices for supporting DHH students.
• Familiarity with classroom procedures, instructional strategies, and educational goals.
• Appropriate operation of assistive technology and communication devices.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in all student-related matters.
• Support students in various settings, including vocational training, recreational activities, and field trips.
• Operate office equipment, including computers and communication devices.
• Ability to operate CART/captioning devices, laptops with transcription tools, webcams, and portable technology setups equipped for various settings.

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s Degree from a 4-year regionally accredited college or university.
• 2+ years of paid interpreting experience.
• Demonstrated ability to apply positive behavior management techniques.
• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage stress effectively.
• Ability to use audio assistive technology (as needed), including earphones and monitors in high-density environments.

This is a Temporary, Nonexempt position with varying hours per week dependent on University needs. As this is a pooled position, applications will be reviewed on a rolling, as-needed basis.

Expected Pay Range: $31.00 - $41.00 per hour

Candidates who exceed both the required and preferred qualifications may be considered for the Senior ASL Interpreter position. The expected pay range for this role is $45.00 - $60.00 per hour.

The above pay range reflects what Pepperdine University reasonably expects to pay for this position at time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on relevant factors such as work experience, market conditions, education/training, and skill level.
