Teen Arts Council Member

Hiring for the 2025 Teen Arts Council will occur at a Job Fair at the Detroit Institute of Arts. 

Applications should be prepared to interview for open Council positions on Monday, July 14, 2025.  

JOB TITLE: Teen Arts Council Member 

DEPARTMENT: Education Programs Department 

REPORTS TO: Manager, Education Programs 

CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Temporary 

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY: Project-Based 

GENERAL SUMMARY 

Under the direction of the Manager, Education Programs, Teen Arts Council Members will work with diverse peers from tri-county high schools and alongside museum professionals to design and implement relevant and meaningful programs for metro Detroit teens.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

• Participate in all Teen Council planning meetings, events, and activities.
• Attend weekly meetings on Fridays and Saturdays for an average of 12-18 hours of meetings per month. Meeting tasks include but are not limited to planning and reflecting on events & programs, participating in learning activities, and sharing updates and information.
• Teen Council Members are responsible for completing assigned tasks independently and in partnership with other Council Members.
• Work as an ambassador for the Teen Council at DIA events and programs in schools and communities.
• Represent metro Detroit teens through authentic input and engagement in DIA Teen Arts Council program design and implementation.

QUALIFICATIONS 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

Must be 16 years of age at the start of the school year of hire, currently enrolled in high school, and a resident of the museum’s Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne County service area to be eligible.

• Ability to work as a collaborative and creative team member.
• Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.
• Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.  
• Demonstrated ability to work with attention to detail and produce accurate results. 
• Demonstrated skills to prioritize and complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines and goals. 
• Ability to operate as a spokesperson for DIA Teen programs & events.
• Knowledge of or interest in the arts and humanities. 
• Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution, and recommend appropriate course of action.
• Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.
• Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork.  This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.
