Technician, Aquatics

Overview

Mendocino Redwood Company (MRC) is looking for Technicians to join our Aquatics team based in either Ukiah, CA or Fort Bragg, CA. This position is seasonal from Mid-December 2026 through Mid-May 2027.

The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director, Forest Sciences and Lead Biologists the Aquatics Technician will survey for and monitor listed salmonids as part of the California Coastal Monitoring Program. 

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conducts spawning surveys for salmonids according to the Coastal Monitoring Program protocol
• Safely captures, marks and releases salmonids associated with out-migrant research
• Conducts database, office, and field preparations

Qualifications

• Course work toward a bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four-year college or university in Fisheries, Wildlife Biology, Forestry or Forest Science, or related field.
• Minimum of 2 months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Familiarity with concepts in forest ecology, and wildlife management techniques and security procedures.
• The employee must have ability to use directional compass and topographical maps. 
• Must maintain and carry a valid driver's license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles including automobiles and trucks in accordance with company policy guidelines

• Regularly stands and walks for extended periods over uneven, steep, wet, slippery, or rough forest terrain, including streambanks and waterways.
• Frequently bends, stoops, crouches, kneels, and squats while collecting samples, taking measurements, inspecting aquatic habitats, and performing other field activities.
• Regularly climbs over or around logs, rocks, vegetation, streambanks, and other natural obstacles.
• May wade through streams, creeks, or shallow waterways while performing surveys, monitoring, or collecting samples.
• Frequently uses hands and fingers to handle sampling equipment, measuring devices, field instruments, tools, and electronic data-collection devices.
• Regularly reaches, carries, pushes, and pulls equipment and supplies while performing fieldwork.
• Must be able to lift and carry field equipment, batteries, sampling supplies, and other materials weighing up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 70 pounds occasionally.
• Requires sufficient balance and coordination to safely navigate uneven terrain, stream crossings, wet surfaces, and other field conditions.
• Requires close and distance vision and the ability to observe aquatic conditions, identify field characteristics, read instruments, and record data.
• May be required to hike significant distances while carrying field equipment and supplies.
• May spend extended periods driving or riding in vehicles, including four-wheel-drive vehicles, to access remote field locations.

• Work is performed primarily outdoors in adverse weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and rugged or steep terrain.

• This position requires regular travel within a local area (typically within 100 miles) by truck or other field vehicles.
