System Engineer

Job Summary:

As a System Engineer, you are responsible for the design, administration, security, reliability, automation, and continuous improvement of Midco's enterprise infrastructure. This includes on-premises and cloud platforms, server operating systems, virtualization environments, container technologies, backup and recovery solutions, and related infrastructure services. System Engineers partner with IT, Security, vendors, and business stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and reliable technology solutions that support business operations and growth.

System Engineers support the full infrastructure lifecycle, including implementation, maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, optimization, disaster recovery, automation, and documentation. They play a critical role in maintaining business continuity, improving operational efficiency, and enabling technology innovation across the organization.

Position levels range from System Engineer Associate through System Engineer Expert, reflecting increasing levels of technical expertise, responsibility, leadership, and strategic impact.

Responsibilities:

• Administer, maintain, monitor, and support enterprise server infrastructure across Windows and Unix/Linux platforms.
• Support virtualization platforms, including provisioning, configuration, optimization, and lifecycle management of virtualized resources.
• Support and enhance cloud infrastructure services, including Azure-based technologies and platform services.
• Implement, maintain, and improve infrastructure automation, scripting, and operational efficiency initiatives.
• Monitor system health, performance, capacity, availability, and reliability using enterprise monitoring and alerting tools.
• Perform system configuration, patching, upgrades, maintenance, and lifecycle management activities.
• Troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure, platform, virtualization, storage, cloud, and operating system issues.
• Participate in infrastructure design, solution evaluation, technology implementation, and modernization initiatives.
• Support containerized platforms and related technologies as applicable.
• Participate in backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning and execution activities.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system configurations, procedures, architecture diagrams, standards, and operational runbooks.
• Partner with Information Security teams to maintain secure infrastructure configurations, support audits and assessments, remediate vulnerabilities, and reduce operational risk.
• Participate in incident response activities and serve in on-call rotations as required.
• Collaborate with internal teams and vendors to support infrastructure operations, projects, and strategic initiatives.
• Contribute to process improvements, operational efficiencies, automation initiatives, and technology standardization efforts.
• Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices relevant to infrastructure engineering.
• Assist with training, mentoring, and knowledge sharing among team members as appropriate to role level.

Required Qualifications:

• Associate's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience supporting enterprise infrastructure systems, including server operating systems, virtualization technologies, and related platforms.
• Understanding of infrastructure administration, troubleshooting methodologies, and enterprise technology environments.
• Experience developing and maintaining technical documentation.
• Ability to analyze technical issues, follow established processes, and implement effective solutions.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Azure or other enterprise cloud platforms.
• Experience with automation, scripting, Infrastructure-as-Code, or configuration management tools.
• Experience supporting container platforms such as Kubernetes.
• Industry certifications related to cloud, infrastructure, virtualization, operating systems, or platform administration.
• Experience working in enterprise-scale infrastructure environments.
• Experience participating in infrastructure projects and technology implementations.

Advancement is sequential and contingent upon successful completion of all requirements at the preceding level, including certifications, proficiency tests, and time-in-role or equivalent experience where applicable.

  • 3-5 years of enterprise infrastructure engineering experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of Windows, Unix/Linux, virtualization, storage, cloud technologies, and infrastructure operations.

  • Additional Responsibilities:

    • Independently manage infrastructure projects and technical initiatives.

    • Design and implement infrastructure solutions within established standards.

    • Perform advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis.

    • Develop automation and scripting solutions that improve operational efficiency.

    • Support capacity planning, performance optimization, and system reliability efforts.

    • Mentor Associate Engineers and provide technical guidance.

    • Participate in evaluating emerging technologies and infrastructure improvements.
• System Engineer – Expert

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

  • 6+ years of enterprise infrastructure engineering experience.

  • Advanced expertise across cloud, virtualization, server platforms, automation, container technologies, and infrastructure architecture.

    • Lead the design and operation of complex enterprise infrastructure solutions.

    • Establish technical standards, architecture direction, and infrastructure roadmaps.

    • Lead infrastructure modernization and automation initiatives.

    • Serve as the senior escalation point for critical incidents and complex technical challenges.

    • Lead Kubernetes, container platform, and advanced cloud initiatives.

    • Drive performance optimization, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and resiliency strategies.

    • Influence infrastructure investment decisions, budgeting, forecasting, and long-term planning.

    • Mentor engineers and provide technical leadership across the organization.

    • Partner with leadership on strategic infrastructure and technology initiatives.

Work Environment:

• The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
• Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment and/or remote work setting, depending on business needs.
• May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per week and outside normal business hours, such as holidays, evenings, and weekends, as business demands dictate.
