Job Description/General Function

Develops and implements high quality, engaging, and effective YMCA swim lessons to all participants. Creates appropriate lesson plans to ensure student learning objectives are met and exceeded. Promotes a positive atmosphere encouraging growth, safety, and engagement.

Responsibilities

Passion for high standards and believes in the YMCA mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility
Develop strong relationships with participants and guardians
Engaging, motivating, and positive personality
Complies program statistics and provides data and reports as required for assigned program(s). Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in program(s)
Ensures that safety procedures are followed and that all programs follow YMCA standards, all relevant regulations, and other applicable standards
Ensures upkeep of related facilities and equipment
Accountable for all participants in assigned swim classes
Follow substitute procedures for staff
Actively participate in all swim lesson instructor in-service trainings and meetings
Submits hours worked accurately on electronic timecard; within timelines for supervisor approval
Other duties as assigned
QualificationsRequired Skills and Experience

16 years of age or older
Previous experience teaching swimming and/or developing lesson plans preferred
Ability to swim proficiently
Must possess strong organization and planning skills
Ability to relate well and communicate effectively and relate to a diverse group of individuals, in all circumstances
Pass comprehensive background check
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
Attends staff meetings and trainings are required and completes all online trainings which include child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire
Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with youths

The following certifications are preferred

YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent
Basic Life Support certification
Emergency oxygen administration certification

Additional Expectations and Duties

Attends staff meetings and trainings as required and complete all online trainings which include child abuse prevention training within 7 days of hire
Upholds YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. Adheres to policies to boundaries with youths
Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations in accordance with mandated reporting requirements
Responsible for general housekeeping tasks to ensure the workspace is always clean
Submits hours worked accurately on the electronic timecard, within timelines for supervisor approval
Passion for high standards and beliefs in the YMCA mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility

Working Conditions

Environment

Aquatic environment
Ability to work inside and outside (environments include humidity, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions) year round
Evening and/or early morning, and/or weekend hours required periodically
Occasional travel required

Physical Abilities

Physical mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200lb person; physical ability to see, hear, and communicate clearly
Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
Must be mentally alert to potentially dangerous situations in order to assure the safety of all swimmers
Physical and mental ability to respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively
Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time
Ability to perform activities which require sustained concentration and attention

Valid driver’s license
Proof of insurance

YMCA Vehicle

18 years of age or older
Valid driver’s license
Driving record which meets or exceeds YMCA standards, driver records request will be submitted
