Lead When Our Community Needs Us Most
When extreme winter weather puts people at risk, CARITAS steps in to provide a safe and welcoming place for our neighbors. We're looking for a compassionate, dependable leader to help lead our Surge Shelter operations during weather activations.
In this role, you'll oversee shelter operations, guide staff and volunteers, support participants, and help ensure everyone is treated with safety, dignity, and respect.
What You'll Do
- Lead shelter operations during your assigned shift.
- Guide and support shelter monitors, volunteers, and interns.
- Welcome participants, complete intake, and provide trauma-informed support.
- Use conflict resolution and de-escalation skills to respond to challenging situations.
- Connect participants with community resources and on-site providers.
- Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and welcoming environment.
What We're Looking For
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and make good decisions under pressure.
- Experience with de-escalation, crisis intervention, or conflict resolution.
- Compassion and respect for people from all backgrounds.
- Reliable transportation and ability to report within 8 hours of an activation notification.
- Shelter, social services, behavioral health, residential, emergency response, or similar experience is preferred.
Position Details
- $21.00/hour
- Part-time, Seasonal/Temporary
- Activation period through March 31, 2027
- 8-hour shifts: 8 AM–4 PM | 4 PM–12 AM | 12 AM–8 AM
- Location: 2220 Stockton Street, Richmond, VA 23219
Certifications: Current CPR and Naloxone certifications, or willingness to complete within one month of hire. Ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
