Monday-Friday, 7:45am-4:15pm, occasional evening and weekends.

Location:

This position is 100% in person, primarily located at 2650 Senter Road, San Jose, CA 95111. Some presence may be required at our other location at 1560 Berger Drive.

Travel:

Local travel may be required up to 80% of the time.

About the San Jose Conservation Corps (SJCC+CS):

One of the first urban conservation corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC+CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also functioning as a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have aged out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma.

Position Summary:

The Field Site Supervisor implements the mission of SJCC+CS by using their leadership, supervisory and technical skills to develop the educational and work skills of young people while preserving the natural landscape of our community. The crew supervisor is responsible for the oversight of various environmental field projects in city and county parks, which may include trail maintenance, invasive species removal, native habitat restoration, beautification, fire fuel reduction, and more. The supervisor is responsible for a team of 4-9 job training Corpsmembers aged 18 to 27.

Job Duties:

General

Transport crew to the job site with equipment trailer in tow
Work on projects that include some of the following trades: Landscaping, trail maintenance, new trail construction, in-stream enhancement, eradicating non-native plant species, fire fuel reduction, roadside maintenance and safety.
Communicate with the project sponsor, sub-contractor, or contractor
Organize, direct, and lead a crew of Corpsmembers to work efficiently to complete projects in the allotted timeframe, ensuring a high quality of work
Determine manpower levels, material quantities, and equipment requirements for each project
Ensure that SJCC+CS policies are upheld and followed on the job site.
Collaborate with program staff
Participate in spike, backcountry, and emergency response expeditions as needed.

Administration & Safety

Complete and upload Corpsmember disciplinary action as needed, and monthly Corpsmember evaluations
Complete and submit daily reports, including attendance, safety tailgates, pre and post trip vehicle inspections, end of day report
Oversee maintenance of vehicles, keys, gas cards, and registration papers.
Conduct tailgate safety meetings on a daily basis and after all work-related accidents, keeping a written record of each meeting
Assure that Corpsmembers wear proper safety gear at all times
Take appropriate safety precautions in the performance of job duties
Complete paperwork for every accident reported, assure that Corpsmembers work safely at all times
Communicate vehicle/work-related injuries to the Project Director
Identify common safety hazards
Read and understand product labels

Corpsmember Development

Be a mentor/role model to Corpsmembers while training them skills in different trades
Build a good rapport with each Corpsmember
Assist Corpsmembers in defining goals and creating a plan to reach those goals
Provide constant feedback on Corpsmembers performance including monthly evaluations
Consistently apply discipline and accountability as necessary
Train Corpsmembers in proper work ethic, attitude, and personal appearance
Implement and monitor the Corpsmember education and training plan related to technical and personal skills needed to complete service assignments, including the required training in CPR/First Aid, communication, and conflict resolution

Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. In the course of work the incumbent may be exposed to biologic or infectious agents, unpleasant odors, fumes, smoke, dust and air contaminants, and insects. The nature of the work may also require the incumbent to use power, vibration, and noise-producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles, work near moving equipment, vehicles or machinery, work on ladders or scaffolding or at heights. The incumbent may be required to use protective clothing, equipment, or devices, and may work near hostile or offensive individuals. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

Equipment Used: The incumbent of this position will be utilizing various power tools, equipment, and Company vehicles. Vehicles include mainly passenger vans, and occasionally a pickup truck with a trailer or flat bed with the proper training.

Employment At-Will

The San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School is an “At-Will” employer. This means that employment with SJCC+CS is voluntarily entered into and staff members are free to resign at any time.  Similarly, SJCC+CS may terminate the employment relationship at any time, with or without cause or prior notice, as it deems appropriate.   This at-will employment relationship can be changed only in a written agreement signed by the staff member and the Executive Director of SJCC+CS.

**SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER**

All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated.  Fully vaccinated means at it has been at least two weeks since the person has completed the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine.
