Study Database Administrator I

COG Research Foundation, LLC (Research Foundation) is a California 501(c)(3) entity founded in 2024 to serve as a fiscal sponsor to support research programs by providing legal, fiduciary, and administrative oversight for the program. The Research Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor for the Children’s Oncology Group (COG).

COG, a member of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN), is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research.  COG unites over 13,500 experts in childhood cancer at more than 220 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Saudi Arabia to conduct more than 50 active clinical trials, with approximately 9,500 participants registered each year in the fight against childhood cancer.

Position Summary 

All staff are employed through the Research Foundation. This role will be in service to COG.

The Study Database Administrator I (Study DBA I) position is responsible for the maintenance and reporting of data submitted to or retrieved from COG data systems in support of mission-critical clinical research applications, under the guidance of senior Study DBA staff. Duties may include: aiding COG Data Operations staff, maintaining routine and ad-hoc reports, and providing database expertise and skills in other areas as needed. This position requires effective interactions with the COG Data Operations staff (Statisticians and Study Builders/Research Coordinators) and assisting them with clinical data operations.

The COG Research Foundation, LLC is a 100% remote employer, though some travel may be required.  Employee must reside within the United States.

Full salary range for this position: $84,177 to $124,412 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $84,177 (minimum) to $104,295 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain data extraction, consolidation and reporting processes across multiple databases, and other data sources, to meet periodic and ad-hoc reporting requirements including: site management, disbursements, regulatory compliance, subject eligibility, toxicity reporting, data submission, long term follow-up, data clean-up and revision, and other administrative and clinical trial requirements.
• Design, develop and maintain study-specific reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) as needed to support COG clinical trial operations.
• Design, develop and maintain computer programs that generate consolidated data to support COG clinical data reporting and analysis.
• Develop and maintain data-timeliness reporting computer programs in collaboration with the study-specific Research Coordinators.
• Support Data Operations staff by guiding them to required data within the clinical data management systems, providing sample SQL queries to ensure proper data usage, and assisting with usage of data access software.
• Adopt and apply COG and industry best practices for data management and application development to ensure the accuracy, integrity and timely delivery of work products to internal and external stakeholders.
• Work with COG’s request tracking system to track task assignments and with project management staff to coordinate tasks with other team members and schedule completion of work deliverables.
• Perform database administration, maintenance and optimization activities for reporting-related database structures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications

• Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in database management, relational database administration and experience working with and manipulating datasets.
• Bachelor’s degree; Computer Science or STEM discipline highly preferred, or substitute with four (4) additional years of relevant work experience.

Other Qualifications

• Must have SQL query and/or SAS programming experience.
• Experience with commercial data reporting tools.
• Excellent customer service, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Goal/results oriented with strong analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with research datasets.
• Experience with SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services).
• JSON/XML import/export experience.
• Experience in a comprehensive cancer center, cooperative group or the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry.
• Master’s degree is a plus.
