Student Web Designer (Fall)

Position Introduction:

The Language Learning Center (LLC) is a computer lab and active learning space that serves the needs of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics (MLLL) at the University of Oklahoma. The LLC provides language placement testing services, language learning resources, and first-response technical support for the department.

The MLLL department’s web presence is its primary digital face to students, prospective enrollees, and the broader university community. This role is responsible for keeping that presence current, visually strong, and easy to navigate — not just by updating content, but by thinking creatively about how the CMS tools available can be used to maximum effect.

The LLC is seeking a creative and technically grounded student to serve as its Web Designer & Digital Experience Specialist. This role is the evolution of the previous Student Programmer position, reflecting a shift from custom development toward CMS-based web management — where design judgment, user experience thinking, and visual storytelling matter as much as technical ability.

NOTE - This role does not require programming expertise. It requires someone who can take a CMS toolkit and use it creatively, thoughtfully, and professionally — someone who looks at a webpage and instinctively knows how to make it better.

The successful candidate will complete CMS training (OU Campus / Modern Campus), manage and update the MLLL website, ensure web content is visually consistent and user-friendly, and support day-to-day LLC operations. This is an outcome-driven role: the expectation is initiative, ideas, and ownership — not just task completion.

Website Management & CMS:

• Complete OU Campus (Modern Campus) CMS training and maintain active certification
• Manage and update content across MLLL website pages: news, events, faculty profiles, course listings, departmental announcements, and LLC information
• Ensure all published content follows OU brand guidelines — correct color palette, typography, image standards, and accessibility requirements
• Coordinate with faculty and staff to gather content updates and publish them accurately and on time
• Proactively identify outdated, broken, or poorly structured pages and recommend improvements
• Monitor and maintain proper web-flow: navigation structure, internal linking, and page hierarchy across the MLLL site

UI / UX Design & Page Aesthetics:

• Apply UI/UX principles to CMS page layouts — not just placing components, but thinking about how users will read, navigate, and experience each page
• Use available CMS components creatively and strategically to produce pages that are visually engaging and easy to use
• Design and maintain visual assets for the website: banners, headers, thumbnail images, and featured graphics
• Evaluate page aesthetics regularly and propose design improvements that reflect the department’s identity and standards
• Ensure mobile responsiveness and accessibility compliance on all maintained pages
• Collaborate with the Design Artist and Social Media Strategist to ensure visual consistency across the website, print, and social platforms

Faculty & Staff Technical Support:

• Assist faculty and staff with everyday computer issues on both Mac and Windows systems
• Help faculty submit content requests, upload materials, and navigate shared platforms and tools
• Respond promptly to technical support tickets and web content requests — turnaround time and clear communication are a priority in this role
• Assist with AV setup, digital displays, and any other technology needs as directed by the LLC Manager

LLC Daily Support — Shared Team Responsibility:

• Assist students with language placement tests and assessment procedures
• Respond to placement-related emails and direct student inquiries to appropriate resources
• Maintain and monitor LLC lab computers — ensure all systems are up to date, running correctly, and free of performance issues. If a system is facing technical problems, coordinate with OUIT or the appropriate IT support team to get it resolved promptly.
• Maintain a clean, welcoming, and professional atmosphere in the LLC space
• Work collaboratively with LLC staff and student team members on larger departmental projects
• Manage reservations of communal spaces (Rooms 229 & 230) as needed

Required Education and Experience:

• Must be currently enrolled in the Fall 2026 Term as an undergraduate student in good standing at the University of Oklahoma.
• Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.

Required Skills:

• Ability to speak, read, and write clear, concise English
• Highly organized; able to manage multiple content requests and deadlines simultaneously
• Strong initiative — proactively identifies web issues and improvement opportunities without being asked
• Quick to respond and communicate — faculty and staff rely on this role for timely updates and support
• Detail-oriented for accuracy of data, content, and visual presentation
• Able to work collaboratively within a small, interdepartmental team
• Customer service orientation

Department Preferences:

• Experience with a CMS platform (OU Campus / Modern Campus, WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, or similar)
• Understanding of UI/UX design principles — layout, visual hierarchy, whitespace, typography, and user flow
• Experience with design tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or similar
• Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS (not required, but helpful for understanding CMS component structure)
• Comfortable working on both Mac and Windows systems and troubleshooting common issues on each
• Familiarity with OU brand guidelines or experience working within institutional brand standards
• Knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG) and mobile-responsive design
• Prior experience creating or maintaining a website, even personally or for a student organization
• Familiarity with languages other than English (not required, but valued in a multilingual department environment)
• Prior customer service or student-facing work experience

Technical skills can be trained. CMS platforms can be learned in a few sessions. What this role truly needs is someone who:

• Looks at a web page and immediately sees what could be better — layout, content, flow, or feel
• Takes CMS components and uses them with intention and creativity, not just functionality
• Responds fast, communicates clearly, and follows through without needing reminders
• Comfortable providing patient, empathetic technical support to faculty and staff, understanding that not everyone has the same
• level of ease with technology, and meeting each person where they are without judgment.
• Brings ideas to the team — about the website, about the LLC, about what would make the department look and feel better online
• Cares about quality output, not just getting things done
