Job Description
Grinnell College Press is the student book publishing company on campus. While many other student publications publish a compilation of the student body's work based on submissions, Press selects and works with 5 hired content creator students who have a concept and content for an entire book, then works to publish these books on a semesterly basis. Editors help to select books to be published before working with one content creator and the Adobe Suite to edit, layout, and publish student creative content into a printed book. Student must possess project management and communication skills, as they work independently and collaboratively with their content creator on each book; as well as fellow Press staff for regular staff meetings and check-ins.
Job duties: Establishes consistent and clear communication with assigned content creator to help realize their vision and collaborate while working closely to make their book. Works independently and applies creative, design, and technological skills to layout book project using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, etc. Ensures that materials and final book files meet Content Creator goals and Press publishing guidelines for printed books. Meets progressive deadlines for book projects and submits exported final files to editors-in-chief to be ordered and printed.
Thoughtfully handles project complications, technical and otherwise, as they arise, with Editor-in-Chief support. Participates in regular staff meetings for topics such as training, updates, check-ins on progress, and publication operations discussions; as well as additional meetings as needed and agreed upon. Receives and responds to feedback on their layout and editing work from content creator, editors, and editors in chief. Likewise, editors contribute thoughtful feedback on their fellow editors' work. Responsible for reviewing anonymized content creator applications and deliberating with fellow editors before voting to select semesters' books to be published. May optionally participate in additional projects or tasks as discussed with editors-in-chief, such as smaller informal publications, running Press events, or assisting with publicity.
Qualifications
Good communication skills. Familiarity with InDesign and Adobe Suite preferred, or willingness to learn (considered). Problem solving skills. Aesthetic design skills.
