Title: Program Sidekick

Schedule: 5-10/hrs/week depending on student availability. Sunday availability preferred.

Overview:

The Program Sidekick will support the Program Assistant and other team members with early literacy program execution including processing children’s books for distribution, assisting families and staff in our free family play space at The Shops at Ithaca Mall, and attending community events. The role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on knowledge of early childhood development and nonprofit operations in a fun and active environment. Perfect for students studying SLP, OT, PT, or education. Open to all students regardless of academic focus.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities (TDRs):

• Cleaning and labeling children’s books prior to community distribution.

• Stocking books on Bright Red Bookshelves and at The Nook.

• Assisting to prepare and install Story Walks in offsite locations.

• Toy cleaning and tidying at The Nook.

• Participate in team meetings, when possible, and contribute to program-related discussion.

• Supervise The Nook during staff breaks.

• Assist with birthday party setup/cleanup when possible.

• Attend and assist at offsite community events when possible.

• Provide occasional office support (printing, shredding, organizing, etc.).

• Opportunity for expanded responsibilities to align with students’ interests.

Candidate Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

• Must be a currently enrolled as a student at Ithaca College.  

• Ability to lift up to 30 lbs., bend down to retrieve things from the floor, and walk ½

     mile on uneven terrain (not simultaneously!).

• Comfortability interacting with infants and young children.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

• Friendly and enthusiastic when socializing with other adults.

• A love of books and reading.

• Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal).

Additional capacities (preferred but not required):

• Slight schedule flexibility to occasionally work on different days to support community events and birthday parties.

• Use of a vehicle to facilitate work at offsite locations such as Story Walks.

• Knowledge of early childhood and/or literacy development.
