Structural Elucidation Intern

Job Details: Job Location: Headquarters- New Jersey - PRINCETON, NJ, Salary Range: $25.00 - $30.00Hourly, This is a 6-month internship opportunity.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a detail-oriented, self-driven professional for a 6 month internship position to support the structural elucidation, analytical characterization, and documentation of a chemical inventory containing approximately 500 compounds. This individual will analyse each batch of each compound using LC/MS to assess purity, identify parent mass, and assign fragmentation patterns, when possible, as well as NMR to acquire and assign 1H and 13C spectra. The role will also be responsible for organizing and uploading analytical files to enable efficient distribution upon request. In addition, she/he will support processing of library data for upload to online marketplaces, including generating chemical identifiers and structure files, searching for CAS numbers, assigning chemical names and synonyms, and conducting market price comparisons for catalogue compounds. She/he will maintain accurate records, support data integrity, and provide laboratory and catalogue support as required. The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments and external resources on relevant issues. The incumbent supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate. 

Job Responsibilities:

Acquire and analyse quality control data for each batch of each compound prepared for inclusion in the online marketplace.
Acquire LC/MS data to assess compound purity, identify parent mass, and assign fragmentation patterns, when possible, to support compound identification and characterization.
Acquire and interpret 1H NMR spectra, including peak assignment, to support confirmation of compound structure.
 Acquire and interpret 13C NMR spectra, including peak assignment, to support structural elucidation and compound verification.
Organize and upload analytical files to catalogue SharePoint folders to enable efficient retrieval and distribution upon request.
 Assist with completion, verification, and maintenance of library inventory records.
Determine SMILES strings and generate SDF files to support accurate catalogue representation of compound structures.
Search for, verify, and document CAS numbers for compounds when available.
 Assign chemical names and synonyms to improve catalogue accuracy, consistency, and searchability.
Identify commercial suppliers offering comparable compounds and compile pricing information to support market price comparisons.
Maintain accurate records, organized files, and supporting documentation to ensure data integrity across compound characterization and catalogue workflows.
Perform other tasks and assignments as needed and specified by management.

Qualifications: Required Skills and Knowledge:

Scientific Laboratory and Analytical Data Experience
•    Working knowledge of organic chemistry, structural elucidation, compound purity assessment, and mass spectrometry-based parent mass identification.
•    Ability to assign 1H and 13C NMR peaks and interpret analytical data for compound characterization; prior experience is preferred, with additional training provided on the job.
•    Hands-on experience with LC/MS and NMR data acquisition and interpretation is preferred; training in data acquisition will be provided as part of the role.
•    Demonstrated understanding of chemical structures and strong attention to detail, with the ability to distinguish between closely related molecules that differ only subtly.
Documentation and Scientific Background
•    Ability to organize analytical files and maintain accurate records in SharePoint and spreadsheet-based systems.
•    Ability to perform careful literature, database, and supplier searches for compound information and price comparisons.
•    Familiarity with CAS number searches, chemical nomenclature, synonyms, and compound catalogue documentation.
•    Ability to determine SMILES strings, generate SDF files, and document chemical identifiers accurately.
•    Ability to work independently with attention to detail, accuracy, and data integrity.
•    Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
•    Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.
•    Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.
•    Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.

Education and Experience Requirement:

•    pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related scientific field.
•    Prior laboratory coursework or experience with analytical chemistry, LC/MS, NMR, compound characterization, or chemical structure documentation preferred.

Physical Demand:
Ability to work in a laboratory environment, handle chemical samples using appropriate safety practice, sit or stand for extended periods, and use computer systems for data entry and file organisation.

Compensation:

$25- $30 per hour
