Sports Instructor

Position summary:

Provide quality sports instruction in accordance with YMCA standards.

Reports To: Program Director

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

· Provide enjoyable, high quality class instruction.

· Appropriately demonstrate and instruct proper exercises in accordance with program standards and guidelines.

· Set up and break down equipment as necessary.

· Sports instructor ensures to outlines the goals of the program.

· Find coverage for self in event of an absence and then notify the Program Director of the change.

· Provide encouragement during instruction while being an enthusiastic and positive representative of the YMCA.

· Be a member service ambassador, remaining abreast of current programs and facility schedules; being prepared to provide personalized direction to other YMCA services.

· Responsible for the health and safety of all individuals in the fitness area, i.e. caution regarding unsafe practices and conditions and perform rescue/first aid when necessary. Report accidents and injuries and complete incident reports.

· Communicate with members, make them feel welcome and address them by name.

· Responsible for attending staff meetings/events. Demonstrate and teach the Character Development values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.

· Continually enhance professional development through certification trainings, additional work shops, educational courses and/or appropriate reading material.

· Work in harmony and cooperation with the staff, volunteers and members of the YMCA.

Education and/or Experience

· High School (GED) preferred.

· College background relating to youth, desired.

· Must have previous experience and/or knowledge in areas offered.

Language Skills:

· Trained and well versed in Listen First, Support Change and Build Community Techniques would be desirable.

· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, business reports, and procedure manuals as necessary.

· Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and to speak effectively before members or employees of the Association and the public is required.

· Bilingual ability is a significant asset.

Reasoning Ability:

· Ability to anticipate, identify and solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

· Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Certifications / Training:

· Must be willing to attend training and certifications to improve knowledge and program quality.

Within first two months of employment:

· CPR/ First Aid Certification

· Child Abuse Prevention

All certifications must be renewed in a timely manner in accordance with general YMCA policies and based on fitness standards

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The position has exposure to Blood borne Pathogens and the incumbent should be educated and prepared on it.
