Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA)

Position Summary

Stepping Stones Therapy, Inc. is seeking a compassionate, energetic, and dependable Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) to provide speech and language services to children and adolescents under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.

The SLPA will implement treatment plans developed by the supervising SLP, document student/client progress, collaborate with families and team members, and support the delivery of high-quality speech and language services. Services may be provided in clinic and/or school-based settings depending on the assigned position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide individual and group speech and language therapy under the direction and supervision of a licensed SLP.

• Implement treatment plans and goals established by the supervising SLP.
• Provide intervention targeting areas such as articulation, phonology, receptive and expressive language, pragmatic/social communication, fluency, and other communication needs within the SLPA's scope of practice.
• Prepare appropriate therapy materials and activities based on client/student goals.
• Collect accurate data during treatment sessions and monitor progress toward established goals.
• Complete treatment notes, documentation, and other required records accurately and within established timelines.
• Communicate relevant observations and client/student progress to the supervising SLP.
• Participate in supervision meetings and maintain regular communication with the supervising SLP.
• Collaborate professionally with SLPs, teachers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, behavior professionals, administrators, office staff, and other members of the treatment or educational team.
• Maintain an organized, safe, and engaging therapy environment.
• Follow established schedules and communicate scheduling concerns, cancellations, and changes promptly.
• Maintain client/student confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, FERPA, and applicable privacy requirements.
• Follow all Stepping Stones Therapy policies and procedures.
• Perform duties only within the legally permitted scope of practice for an SLPA and under appropriate SLP supervision.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Completion of an approved Speech-Language Pathology Assistant educational or training program.
• Current California SLPA registration/license in good standing, as required for the position.
• Knowledge of speech, language, communication, and child development.
• Experience working with children and adolescents preferred.
• Experience with pediatric, school-based, and/or neurodivergent populations is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to follow treatment plans and supervisory direction.
• Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining appropriate communication with the supervising SLP and clinical team.
• Reliable, professional, flexible, and able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Physical and Work Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Depending on the assignment, duties may include sitting on the floor or at child-sized tables, standing, walking, bending, reaching, transitioning between treatment areas or classrooms, and handling therapy materials and equipment.

The position may require travel between assigned clinic, school, or community locations.

The SLPA is expected to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, appropriate clinical judgment, and respect in interactions with clients, families, coworkers, school personnel, and other professionals.

The SLPA must maintain appropriate professional boundaries, protect confidential information, arrive prepared and on time for scheduled services, complete documentation promptly, and communicate proactively regarding any concerns that may affect client care or assigned responsibilities.

Scope of Practice and Supervision

The SLPA works under the direction and supervision of a qualified Speech-Language Pathologist and must comply with all applicable California laws and regulations governing SLPA practice.

The SLPA does not independently diagnose communication disorders, develop or modify treatment plans or IEP goals, interpret assessment results, or perform duties that require the professional judgment of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist.
