About the Environment Resource Center

The Environmental Resource Center of Associated Students focuses on increasing sustainability through
projects, policies, and education/outreach. Our team works towards promoting zero waste, educating
students on various social justice and environmental issues through environmental events/ workshops,
providing sustainability resources for students on campus, and incorporating sustainable advancements
into the functions of the Associated Students’ operations and programs.

Position Details

The SOL Patch Community Garden plays an important component, critical to providing community,
environmental education, and personal development for members of the SFSU student body. The Sol
Patch Coordinator is responsible for managing a wide range of administrative and gardening support
activities for the Sol Patch Community Garden. Duties include, but not limited to: planning and
facilitating garden meetings and events, inventory, community outreach, and garden maintenance;
reinventing SOL patch landscape to draw in pollinators and beneficial species; coordinate with campus
departments, programs, and student organizations to assure the success of the community space. The
SOL Patch Coordinator will be the point person for all things SOL Patch, collaborating with all members
of the SFSU community to assure this space best serves the students in the most just and
environmentally sustainable way.

Job Description

• Facilitate weekly gardening workshops focused around food literacy, social justice through urban farming, the importance of preserving biodiversity, native California ecology, and stress reduction at the SOL Patch
• Coordinate with the AS Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC) to maintain and manage the ECEC greenhouse
• Develop education workshops for the children at the ECEC focused around growing fruits and vegetables, from seed to plate
• Help facilitate SOL Patch Garden bed adoptions via the ERC Google forms adoptions sheets
• Oversee all seed germination, planting, and produce harvesting Act as the SOL Patch Community Garden Point Person answering any questions from SFSU students, staff, and faculty
• Contribute to the “How To” booklet explaining the ideal way to manage the SOL Patch Community Garden and its ECEC green house extension 
• Maintain connections with the SFSU grounds team in order to properly manage pests, maintain garden beds/irrigation system, and create informational workshops
• Maintain connections with Health Promotions and Wellness to further develop garden workshops focus around stress reduction and student food security Produce monthly reports on SOL Patch functions and events  

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled at SFSU with a minimum of 6 units for undergraduates or 4 units for graduates
• Must have basic gardening knowledge and experience
• Must have passion for and/or background in environmental sustainability, environmental justice, botany, ecology, or community organizing
• Previous volunteer work with the ERC and/or environmental organizations is a plus
• Excellent written skills; highly experienced with email correspondence
• Excellent verbal skills; able to give presentations and lead meetings
• Excellent organizational skills; experience with creating/managing calendars, agendas, and planting schedules
• Proficient with Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets, Microsoft Word/Google Docs, and Microsoft PowerPoint/Google Slides
• Must be able to carry out physical work associated with gardening and light landscaping
