Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide advanced internal medicine consultation and patient care while contributing to the continued development of a modern academic referral service. Initial responsibilities will focus on service development, caseload growth, collaboration with hospital services, and relationship-building with regional referring veterinarians.

As our DVM program matures, this position will naturally evolve to include structured clinical teaching and supervision, with anticipated student participation beginning in approximately two years. Small Animal Internal Medicine at SSVM

The Small Animal Internal Medicine Service is central to SSVM's mission of delivering exceptional patient care while preparing graduates who are confident in managing complex medical cases through collaborative, evidence-based practice.

Our service is designed to:

• Deliver advanced internal medicine consultation and care for companion animal patients
• Provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and longitudinal case management
• Collaborate closely with primary care, urgent care, and specialty clinicians
• Strengthen relationships with referring veterinarians throughout the region
• Provide students with outstanding educational experiences in internal medicine
• Advance clinical scholarship, research, and innovation

The Internal Medicine Service is housed within the SSVM Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital and is supported by advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, including:

• GE 3 Tesla MRI
• 128-slice CT scanner
• Digital radiography
• Ultrasonography
• Endoscopy capabilities
• In-house clinical pathology
• On-site pharmacy with sterile compounding capabilities
• Multidisciplinary specialty consultation

Faculty work closely with colleagues in Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery, Neurology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology, Dentistry & Oral Surgery, Primary Care, Urgent Care, Anesthesia & Pain Management, and expanding specialty services including Oncology and Dermatology.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide advanced internal medicine consultation and medical management for companion animal patients
• Perform comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and develop individualized treatment plans
• Collaborate with primary care and specialty clinicians to provide integrated patient care
• Build relationships with regional referring veterinarians
• Develop and refine clinical protocols, standard operating procedures, and workflow processes
• Participate in development of the internal medicine curriculum and pre-clinical educational experiences
• Prepare for future clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students
• Engage in scholarly activity and collaborative clinical research
• Contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive hospital culture

Required Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree
• Board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or equivalent
• Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New Jersey
• Demonstrated expertise in companion animal internal medicine
• Strong communication skills and enthusiasm for collaboration with referring veterinarians and interdisciplinary teams
• Adaptability, initiative, and enthusiasm for helping build a growing academic Internal Medicine Service

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous teaching, mentoring, or academic experience
• Interest in clinical education and curriculum development
• Interest in clinical research or scholarly activity
• Experience developing clinical protocols, workflows, or quality improvement initiatives
• Interest in advancing academic internal medicine within a collaborative referral environment

Salary and Benefits

In accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is $140,000–$250,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, appointment track, and appointment percentage. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.

Academic Appointment

This is an open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the Clinical Track or Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals.

Both full-time and part-time appointments will be considered. Faculty rank, appointment track, responsibilities, and effort allocation will be determined at the time of appointment based on the successful candidate's qualifications, career interests, and the needs of the School.
