Shop Intern

The Shop Intern assists the shop and mechanic team with general maintenance, cleaning, and entry-level support tasks in the company's shop area. This position is designed for a student seeking hands-on experience in a construction shop environment, combining shop helper duties with basic mechanic helper support. Being reliable, self-motivated, and eager to learn is essential in this role.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Including but not limited to the list below.

• Report to work each workday on or before the designated check-in time in proper PPE attire.
• Sweep and power clean shop floors.
• Empty garbage cans.
• Clean and restock bathrooms.
• Put away stock items in the parts room.
• Operate ride-on sweeper to keep the parking lot clean.
• Power wash various pieces of equipment once repairs have been made.
• Detail fleet trucks and equipment cabs.
• Fuel equipment when needed.
• Remove snow from walkways using a snow blower, broom, or shovel, and salt walkways as needed.
• Conduct regular maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs.
• Drive a company vehicle to pick up parts for mechanics when needed.
• Assist mechanics with basic maintenance tasks, including oil changes, filter changes, and fluid checks under supervision.
• Fetch tools, parts, and equipment for mechanics as needed.
• Help clean and organize mechanical parts and components.
• Assist with dismantling and reassembling equipment using hand tools under mechanic supervision.
• Learn basic diagnostic and repair procedures by observing and assisting certified mechanics.
• Complete daily work assignments in a timely and accurate manner.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
• Use various equipment, hand, and power tools in a safe manner.
• Comply with all safety policies, procedures, and standards of safety.
• Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Skills and Qualifications:

• Those with an education and/or work-related credential from a secondary or post-secondary educational system will be given preferred interview status (Precision Exams, NOCTE, etc.).
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Interest in learning mechanical and shop maintenance skills.
• Experience working with tools, including hand and power tools, is a plus.
• Creative problem-solving abilities.
• Display a willing attitude to learn from others.
• Possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
• Ability to work safely in close proximity to heavy equipment and machinery.
• Ability to adapt to changing work priorities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to get to and from work.
• Ability to work a flexible, part-time schedule around school commitments.

Physical Requirements:

• Able and willing to work assigned hours, including occasional responses to maintenance needs.
• Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
• Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
• Requires good manual dexterity.

Internship Details:

This is a student internship position intended to provide hands-on shop and mechanic support experience. This position is not eligible for company benefits.
