Overview

Azure Arc extends Azure services and management capabilities across on-premises, multi-cloud, and edge environments, enabling customers to manage servers, Kubernetes clusters, applications, and infrastructure through a consistent control plane. The platform helps organizations simplify governance, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate innovation regardless of where their workloads run. As a Senior Software Engineer in Azure Arc within Azure Core, you will help build the Kubernetes-based platform that enables Azure services to run beyond traditional cloud boundaries. You will design and develop scalable platform capabilities that allow customers to manage resources consistently across public clouds, datacenters, and edge environments. Working closely with partner teams across Microsoft, including database, application platform, and hybrid infrastructure services, you will help bring Azure experiences to customers wherever their workloads reside.

This role offers the opportunity to solve complex distributed systems challenges using technologies such as Go, Python, Kubernetes, Linux, and leading open-source projects. You will play a key role in redefining virtualization for the cloud-native era by building and operating KubeVirt and KVM-based virtualization platforms on Kubernetes, bringing virtual machines and containers together on a unified platform at hyperscale. You'll influence technical direction, collaborate with the open-source community, contribute to highly scalable hybrid cloud infrastructure, and help shape the future of cloud-native management experiences for customers around the world.

Responsibilities

• Work with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
• Contribute to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
• Create and implement code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable.
• Contribute to efforts to break down larger work items into smaller work items and provides estimation.
• Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
• Remain current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Golang, or Python
  • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Golang, or Python 
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Golang, or Python 
  • OR equivalent experience.
• Experience with containers and Kubernetes.
• Ability to engage in site-reliability engineering practices.
• Demonstrated problem solving and debugging skills.
• Experience building RESTful services and experiences developing software hosted in Azure, AWS, or other similar Cloud platforms. 
• Experience with Linux virtualization technologies, including QEMU, KVM, libvirt, and virtio.
• Experience with hypervisor architecture, VM lifecycle management, CPU/memory virtualization, NUMA, SR-IOV, and device passthrough.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
