Senior Software Engineer, Bet Engine

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Bet Engine based in the United States.

This is a senior engineering role focused on building and scaling highly critical systems that power sportsbook wagering, casino transactions, financial records, and regulatory operations.
You will design and optimize performant APIs, low-latency services, databases, and distributed systems operating at significant scale.
The role combines deep technical ownership with hands-on architecture, production performance optimization, reliability engineering, and end-to-end feature delivery.
You will work across internal, third-party, legacy, and modern systems while solving complex integration, data, and infrastructure challenges.
Accuracy, resilience, auditability, and performance are essential because the systems you support process wagers, payouts, financial records, and regulatory data.
You will collaborate with stakeholders across multiple business domains while mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards through technical guidance and code review.

Accountabilities:

• Design, scale, and performance-tune GraphQL APIs, low-latency gRPC services, and SQL queries supporting sportsbook wagering and grading, casino transactions, financial ledgers, responsible gaming, tax and regulatory enforcement, promotional records, and risk management.
• Own complex technical problems from investigation through resolution, developing technical proposals and presenting recommendations to leadership and partner teams.
• Design, architect, and deliver new features end-to-end within a collaborative Agile/Scrum environment.
• Identify production bottlenecks, reliability risks, and scalability constraints, and drive improvements that strengthen platform performance and resilience.
• Establish and refine monitoring and alerting through Datadog for the systems under your ownership.
• Mentor engineers across teams through technical specifications, pairing, code reviews, and hands-on technical guidance.
• Collaborate with stakeholders across diverse business domains to deliver high-quality products, operational improvements, and cost-efficiency initiatives.
• Bridge internal, third-party, legacy, and modern systems through data migrations, data translation layers, integrations, and supporting infrastructure.
• Maintain a strong focus on software correctness, reliability, performance, auditability, and operational readiness across production systems.
• Participate in production on-call rotations and take ownership of release cycles and operational outcomes.
• Contribute to continuous improvements in architecture, engineering practices, observability, and system scalability.
• Perform additional engineering and technical responsibilities as required.

Requirements:

• At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong foundation in computer science, data structures, algorithms, distributed systems, and software design.
• Proven experience working with production systems at scale, including identifying performance improvements through load testing, tracing, and production analysis.
• Hands-on experience investigating and resolving performance regressions involving CPU, I/O, memory, and latency in high-throughput services.
• Experience participating in production on-call rotations and owning software release cycles end-to-end.
• Strong commitment to clean architecture, maintainable code, and software craftsmanship.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing technical specifications, runbooks, and cross-team design documentation.
• Experience with modern web frameworks and API development, such as Phoenix, Ruby on Rails, FastAPI, Laravel, or Node.js.
• At least 2 years of experience designing and evolving GraphQL schemas for applications serving multiple clients, including iOS, Android, and web.
• Experience building and integrating multi-client or white-label platforms, including geographic routing and client-specific configuration.
• Strong knowledge of relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, including database theory, normalization, denormalization, and performance-versus-flexibility tradeoffs.
• Experience with Kubernetes and operating services in containerized environments.
• Comfortable working with the terminal, Git, GitHub or similar version-control platforms, and modern development environments.
• Experience with testing frameworks such as ExUnit, RSpec, Jest, pytest, or equivalent.
• Experience with background job processing technologies such as Oban, Exq, Sidekiq, Celery, or Beanstalk.
• Experience with asynchronous event infrastructure such as Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS/SNS, or Google Cloud Pub/Sub.
• Experience with agentic software development tools, agentic workflows, and validating the quality of agent-generated outputs is a strong advantage.
• Experience building financial, legal, or process-accounting systems where correctness and auditability are critical is highly valuable.
• Experience with Elixir, hexagonal architecture, Domain-Driven Development, open-source contributions, startup environments, or sports/esports technology is a plus.
• Ability to work effectively across teams, communicate complex technical concepts clearly, and take ownership of high-scope engineering challenges.
