Senior Social Writer

About the role

Hammer’s Senior Social Writer is the position between Social Writer and Creative Lead/Senior Social Writer. While you will maintain the same responsibilities of a Social Writer, the role of Senior Social Writer adds additional expectations creatively and elevates your role internally as a backstop for quality.

In short, a Senior Social Writer is expected to have enough experience creating social content that they can slot into various social projects and develop quality creative content… regardless of familiarity with the game. The Senior Social Writer has a prolific ability to create diverse types of social content, showing a wide range and deep well of creative ability. 

It is your responsibility to make sure our concepts are creative, well presented, and achieve Hammer’s standard of excellence. Once a client selects a concept, it is also your responsibility to act as Creative Lead on these social assets… making sure we are properly addressing client feedback and delivering what was promised by and expected of Hammer. The Senior Social Writer will work with Hammer’s internal social team of writers, editors, capture artists, and producers to ensure the highest quality social creative possible.

Social content is obviously the main area of focus across the company that a Senior Social Writer should be able to ideate, oversee and feedback, but they should also be actively learning how to function as a Creative Lead on larger scale projects beyond social. Below is a breakdown of the responsibilities and expectations for growth.

Responsibilities & Expectations

SOCIAL

We often have either continuous social retainers or one off asks for social series from clients. A Senior Social Writer should be able to do the following for any social asset delivery.

• Digesting a client brief and turning into an internal Hammer brief to kick off our creatives. 
• Writing initial seeds and then fleshed out client facing concepts that answer client briefs to show off in-game content creatively and effectively on social. Develop platform-native concepts specifically for how audiences consume and interact with content across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and other emerging platforms, with a strong understanding of current formats, trends, creator behaviors, memes, hooks, pacing and audience expectations.
• Generate a high volume and variety of creative approaches from a single brief, exploring different tones, formats, hooks and creative territories before identifying and developing the strongest concepts.
• Act as creative lead on client asks, selecting the seeds and feedbacking the concept deck before it goes to our client. Once a client has made selects, turning concepts into a beat sheet for capture to then create a shot list.
• Be able to feedback capture shotlist, and guide capture on how you are envisioning the concept is shot, the mix of gameplay vs freecam, what the important beats are to communicate the concept, etc.
• As time allows, go into Discord to give live feedback to capture, build rapport with capture artists and have a creative relationship. 
• When edit is posted, feedback capture and editorial to elevate the concept and make it as clear and entertaining as possible.
• Given that live service games are a significant part of our social pipeline, a Senior Social Writer should stay up-to-date on the titles they support through actively playing the games and researching current trends, updates, modes and evolving player behaviors. This should include an understanding of the broader social ecosystem and community trends surrounding each title to help inform concepts that feel native, timely and relevant to its audience.

TRAILERS AND SOCIAL SERIES

A Senior Social Writer should also be sharpening their writing skills to contribute to client asks outside of social, whenever possible, to grow as a Creative Lead. This will take the form of either “entry level” trailers (shorter TRT, more straightforward concepting that shows off gameplay features, limited budgets) or recurring, longer form social content that acts as a series to show off various gameplay approaches or styles. 

A Senior Social Writer should be getting the opportunities to contribute to these asks as time allows, to strengthen their abilities to eventually act as a Creative Lead on projects outside of social. This includes:

• Adapting client briefs into internal briefs that set the team up for success with creative thought starters and a clear POV of how we elevate the assignment to Hammer’s quality bar. 
• Oversee and contribute to concepting of distinct creative approaches to a trailer or high end social series, including visual references that make it clear to client the editorial/gfx/capture that make each concept’s unique “creative wrapper”. 
• Oversee and feedback fleshing out internal selects into client facing scripts with concept intro slide and visual “director treatment” slide.
• Able to dupe an existing client deck and create a presentation of three scripts with an introduction slide explaining our creative approach to the assignment without help from the Art team.
• Oversee the creative development of scripts and concepts from ideation through trailer completion
• Lead client presentations and feedback calls to communicate scripts, concepts, and creative strategy

The pay range for this temporary role is $40.00 - $56.25 USD per hour (LA-based), depending on experience and qualifications. This range does not reflect any potential future full-time compensation and applies only to the temporary freelance scope of this position.
