The Zillow Group Legal and Compliance Department is a dedicated team of skilled (and fun!) legal professionals who enjoy working in a collegial environment within an innovative, fast-paced tech, real estate, and media company. This role is part of the Business Lines Legal Team, which provides frontline support for Zillow's products and services.

About the role

We are looking for an outstanding, experienced attorney to join our Industry Affairs and Industry Software legal team. This role sits at the intersection of regulated real estate and product, and is uniquely suited for a lawyer who can operate fluidly across both — advising on licensed real estate activities and brokerage operations on one hand, while serving as dedicated legal counsel for an assigned scope of products on the other.

This attorney should have demonstrated expertise in supporting real estate brokerage activities and product development, offering creative solutions to complex problems, and excelling at building strong relationships with both clients and colleagues. Equally important, this attorney must have the desire and demonstrated ability to thrive in an environment where product scope evolves, industry dynamics shift, and priorities change — the right candidate is energized by this reality and embraces it alongside the business partners we support. 

In this role, you will get to:

• Serve as the primary legal POC for Zillow’s brokerage operations and the team’s subject matter expert on licensed real estate activities, with particular focus on products that intersect with licensed activity 
• Provide full lifecycle product counsel for designated consumer and/or B2B products across a broad range of legal matters including regulatory compliance, data licensing, product design and commercial agreements
• Provide legal support to our industry affairs team including MLS escalations, emerging industry issues, and related strategic initiatives
• Embed yourself with business partners and provide strategic and pragmatic legal counsel for issues of first impression, pilot programs, and other key initiatives, including legal risk analysis and recommendations to senior management
• Proactively partner with cross-functional business teams and shared services (e.g., privacy, fair housing, finance, compliance, communications, and marketing) to identify and resolve novel legal matters that arise
• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements
• Handle any real estate licensing complaints and investigations
• Provide ad-hoc legal support and subject matter expertise to Government Relations, Litigation, Communications, and other shared services 

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.

In California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $160,900.00 - $257,100.00 annually. This base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia the standard base pay range for this role is $152,900.00 - $244,300.00 annually. The base pay range is specific to these locations and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. Employees in this role will not be paid below the salary threshold for exempt employees in the state where they reside.

Who you are

You are a highly responsive and trusted advisor that has:

• 7+  years of relevant experience with a national or regional law firm or in-house legal department, with substantial real estate regulatory and product counseling experience; in-house experience at a real estate brokerage or prop tech company strongly preferred 
• A JD with active state bar admission in at least one jurisdiction
• Experience with real estate regulatory frameworks, MLS policies, and the broader regulatory and industry landscape in which real estate professionals, brokerages and real estate portals operate in
• Experience with data licensing, marketing, and commercial agreements 
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to persuasively convey the implications of legal issues and risk
• Outstanding attention to detail, a proactive and collaborative work ethic, and excellent drafting and negotiation skills
• Aptitude for innovative and goal-oriented problem solving
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to successfully and independently handle competing and time-sensitive projects
• A team-first attitude with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and levels to develop consumer-centric, leading-edge solutions
