Senior Indirect Tax Accountant

We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant with a strong background in sales and use tax. This person will support a complex, high-volume environment with approximately 900 filings per year across 38 states. Manufacturing experience would be helpful due to tax exemptions, and SAP experience is preferred but not required.

The role may also have some exposure to fixed assets, banking, and treasury. This position is expected to run through mid-to-late June with the potential to become permanent.

The position offers a hybrid schedule, with Mondays and Fridays working from home and Tuesday through Thursday in the office, along with flexible start times between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. A bachelor’s degree is required.

Job Description

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in managing sales and use tax compliance, maintaining accurate general ledger and banking records, and supporting financial close and audit activities. This position ensures that accounting practices align with company policies and GAAP, while also contributing to process improvements and providing backup support for treasury and banking operations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and/or assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax filings.
• Reconcile sales tax accounts and investigate discrepancies to ensure accurate reporting.
• Review sales and purchasing transactions to confirm appropriate sales and use tax treatment.
• Maintain tax-related schedules and supporting documentation in an organized and accessible manner.
• Assist with tax audits, notices, registrations, and information requests from tax authorities.
• Support other state and local tax reporting requirements as needed.
• Prepare and post monthly, quarterly, and annual journal entries in the general ledger.
• Perform general ledger and balance sheet account reconciliations to maintain accurate financial records.
• Analyze account balances, identify issues, and investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly.
• Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes.
• Maintain accurate and complete accounting records in accordance with company policies and applicable GAAP.
• Prepare schedules and documentation to support internal and external audits.
• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls, and contribute to implementing enhancements.
• Provide backup support for daily banking activities when needed.
• Assist with online banking activities, including reviewing transactions and monitoring account activity.
• Provide backup support for deposits, withdrawals, transfers, and other approved banking transactions.
• Assist with monitoring bank balances and identifying unusual or unexpected activity.
• Prepare and/or review bank reconciliations to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Assist with ACH, wire, check, and other payment processes in accordance with company policies and internal controls.
• Provide backup support for bank account administration and communication with banking representatives.
• Assist with gathering information for bank reporting, financing requirements, and other banking-related requests.
• Maintain appropriate documentation and confidentiality for all banking and treasury activities.
• Follow company policies regarding authorization, segregation of duties, and approval of banking transactions.

Essential Skills

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field is required.
• At least 3 years of sales and use tax experience is required.
• Strong accounting knowledge, including general ledger accounting and reconciliation.
• Hands-on experience with sales and use tax compliance and account reconciliations.
• Ability to prepare and post journal entries and support financial close processes.
• Understanding of GAAP and ability to maintain accurate and complete accounting records.
• Experience with treasury or banking-related activities, including bank reconciliations and payment processing.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to investigate and resolve account discrepancies.
• Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate documentation and confidentiality.
• Ability to follow and uphold company policies related to authorization, segregation of duties, and internal controls.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• SAP experience is highly preferred.
• Experience in a manufacturing environment is highly preferred.
• Experience supporting internal and external audits is beneficial.
• Ability to identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes and internal controls.
• Comfort working in a hybrid environment with both in-office and remote responsibilities.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Kansas City, MO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $48.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
