Definition of Position: 

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, and oversight of the SANE program within the Emergency Department. This role ensures the delivery of compassionate, trauma-informed, and evidence-based care to patients presenting after sexual assault or abuse. The SANE Coordinator collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, maintains regulatory compliance, and supports staff education and program quality improvement.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

Program Management & Coordination:

• Develop, implement, and maintain the SANE program in accordance with state and national guidelines.
• Coordinate SANE coverage for patients presenting to the Emergency Department after sexual assault or abuse.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for SANE-related services within the organization.
• Maintain program policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with best practices.

Clinical Oversight:

• Provide direct patient care as a SANE nurse when needed.
• Ensure proper forensic evidence collection, documentation, and chain of custody.
• Promote trauma-informed care practices and patient advocacy.
• Support staff in complex or sensitive cases.

Education & Training:

• Coordinate initial and ongoing SANE training for nursing staff.
• Ensure competency validation and continuing education requirements are met.
• Provide education to ED staff on sexual assault response, documentation, and patient support.

Quality Improvement & Compliance:

• Monitor program performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
• Participate in audits, case reviews, and peer review processes.
• Maintain accurate records and reporting metrics.

Collaboration & Community Outreach:

• Collaborate with law enforcement, advocacy groups, prosecutors, and social services.
• Serve as liaison between the hospital and community partners.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and community initiatives.
• Promote awareness of SANE services within the community.

Additional:

• The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education

                Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. 

Preferred: BSN                                                                                                                                      

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations

Required: Current RN license in the state of Oregon, Completion of SANE-A (Adult/Adolescent) and/or SANE-P (Pediatric), ACLS, PALS, BLS, TNCC certification required, TCRN within 1 year of hire

Experience

Required: Three years’ emergency clinical experience

                Preferred: Prior experience in forensic nursing, sexual assault response, or trauma care. Experience in program coordination, leadership, or education strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements:

The physical and sensory functions described below are essential to the successful performance of this position. The position requires sufficient auditory ability to detect and respond to various sounds, including patient alarms and verbal communication. Clear and effective communication is essential, as is the ability to interact with patients, families, and healthcare team members. Visual acuity is necessary for observing patient conditions, reading documentation and monitors, and distinguishing colors for clinical purposes, such as identifying medications or safety indicators. Tactile perception is also important for assessing physical characteristics such as temperature, size, shape, or texture during patient care. Motor coordination is required for reaching, grasping, handling, and performing fine motor tasks necessary for the use of medical equipment and procedures. The position also involves occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling when assisting patients or accessing equipment. Walking and standing are typically continuous throughout the shift. The role requires the ability to lift to 50 pounds independently and involves frequent pushing, pulling, carrying, or repositioning of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds. There may also be occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds, with the expectation that appropriate lifting techniques, mechanical aids, or team assistance will be used to ensure safety. May to sit for long periods of time.

Working Conditions:

This position is performed primarily in an indoor healthcare environment, such as a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility. While the work setting is protected from outdoor weather conditions, it may be subject to variable indoor temperatures. The role involves frequent exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment, with the expectation that all staff follow appropriate safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

The health care environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring the ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances, including high-pressure or emergency situations. The work setting also involves multiple simultaneous demands and varying levels of noise due to medical equipment, staff activity, and patient needs. Primarily based in the Emergency Department. May require on-call responsibilities and response outside of regular business hours. Exposure to emotionally sensitive and potentially distressing situations.
