Position Summary

Boone Memorial Health is seeking a skilled and compassionate Pre-Op & Pacu - Per Diem Nurse to join our Surgical Services team.

The Perioperative RN provides safe, effective, and high-quality, patient- and family-centered care throughout the surgical experience. The RN Circulator is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for patients undergoing surgical and invasive procedures.

Serving as a primary patient advocate in the operating room, the Perioperative RN promotes patient safety, protects patient rights and dignity, and collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other members of the healthcare team.

Essential Functions

Promoting the mission, vision, and values of Boone Memorial Hospital.
Assessing patients at intervals according to hospital policies and procedures.
Developing and implementing individualized perioperative plans of care.
Serving as a patient advocate throughout the surgical experience.
Protecting patients from injury related to chemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, and other hazards.
Performing surgical counts to prevent unintended retained surgical items.
Participating in surgical time-outs and verifying the correct patient, procedure, site, and side.
Assisting with safe patient positioning and maintaining patient comfort and safety.
Maintaining strict standards of asepsis and infection prevention.
Managing and appropriately labeling and handling surgical specimens.
Safely administering medications according to established standards and policies.
Monitoring and maintaining the patient's physiological status throughout the perioperative period.
Implementing interventions to promote adequate tissue perfusion and protect skin and tissue integrity.
Maintaining patient normothermia during the perioperative period.
Providing appropriate patient and family education regarding the surgical experience, medications, pain management, wound care, nutrition, and expected recovery.
Actively involving patients and designated support persons in decisions regarding their plan of care.
Communicating patient status and pertinent information effectively during handoffs and transitions of care.
Evaluating patient progress toward established outcomes.
Transferring care appropriately and providing complete handoff communication.
Delegating tasks appropriately in accordance with the West Virginia Nurse Practice Act and hospital policies.
Documenting nursing care accurately, completely, and in accordance with hospital standards.
Collaborating effectively with physicians, anesthesia providers, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals.
Monitoring surgical equipment and supplies to ensure proper functioning and availability.
Preparing supplies and equipment according to surgical preference cards.
Maintaining and updating preference cards as needed.
Conducting pre- and post-procedure inventories as required.
Participating in quality improvement and performance improvement activities.
Using effective problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills to promote positive working relationships.
Maintaining required competencies, certifications, and professional standards.
Pursuing professional growth and demonstrating professional behavior and etiquette toward patients, families, physicians, and coworkers.
Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
Providing culturally appropriate, age-appropriate, ethical, and legally compliant care.
May float among various clinical services for which the RN is qualified.
Performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of West Virginia.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years of perioperative or operating room nursing experience preferred.
Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification preferred.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Stand and walk for extended periods.
Perform a full range of body movements, including handling and repositioning patients.
Lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Push and pull heavy equipment and supplies.
Demonstrate manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
Work in a fast-paced and stressful clinical environment.
Work with and around blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and other occupational hazards.
Follow all applicable safety and infection prevention practices.
